Questions and answers

How is the AP US Government exam scored?

Multiple choice is 50% of the score (55 questions) and four free response questions share the other 50% equally: concept application (3 points), quantitative analysis (4), SCOTUS comparison (4) and the argument essay (6). Because each question is 12.5% of the exam, one point on the 3-point concept application question is worth more than one point on the essay.

What percentage do I need for a 5 on AP Gov?

On our table a 5 starts at 77 of 100 composite points, for example 45 of 55 multiple choice right with 3, 3, 3 and 4 on the four free response questions. The published estimates we average disagree more than usual for this exam, so the result shows a band when you are near a cutoff.

Which AP Gov free response question is worth the most?

Each of the four counts for 12.5% of the exam, but they have different point totals, so a point on concept application (out of 3) is worth about 4.2 composite points, while a point on the argument essay (out of 6) is worth about 2.1. The calculator's goal box shows this for your inputs.

What required documents and court cases do I need for AP Gov?

The course names nine foundational documents (including the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and Federalist 10, 51 and 70) and fifteen required Supreme Court cases. The SCOTUS comparison question always uses one required case, and the argument essay asks you to cite a foundational document.

What percent do I need to get a 3 on AP US Government and Politics?

A 3 starts at about 53 of 100 composite points on our table, which is roughly 53% of the available points. Because the sections are weighted, it depends on where you lose the points: with a strong free response section you can miss a good share of the 55 multiple choice questions. Enter your expected points and the goal box shows exactly what a 3 needs.

Is this AP Gov score calculator accurate?

The section weights and point values come from the College Board's course and exam description and scoring guidelines, so the composite follows the official weighting for the points you enter. The 1 to 5 is an estimate: the College Board never publishes cutoffs, so our boundaries average published third party estimates, named under the result with the date we checked them. Your real score can differ by one step when you are close to a cutoff.

Can I use this AP Gov calculator for a 2026 exam or practice test?

Yes, as long as your practice test has the same sections as the May 2027 exam described above. Enter your points from a released 2026 free response set or a full practice test and the composite is calculated the same way. The 1 to 5 uses our estimated 2027 cutoffs, and the 2026 score distribution on this page shows how real students did last May.

Does a 3 on AP US Government and Politics count for college credit?

Many colleges give credit or placement for a 3, and selective colleges often ask for a 4 or 5 in this subject. The policy is set by each college, not by the College Board, so check the AP credit page of the colleges on your list before you decide which scores to send.
