Questions and answers

How long is the ACT test?

The ACT takes 2 hours 5 minutes of testing for the three required sections: English (35 minutes), Math (50) and Reading (40). With the 15 minute break after Math it is 2 hours 20 minutes. Optional Science adds 40 minutes and optional Writing another 40 plus a 5 minute break.

How long is the ACT exam with science?

2 hours 45 minutes of testing (165 minutes), the same 2 hours 45 minutes ACT gives for the multiple choice tests, or 3 hours with the break. ACT's published end time for ACT plus Science is 11:55 a.m. online and 12:15 p.m. on paper.

How long is the ACT without writing?

Without Writing the ACT is 2 hours 5 minutes of testing, or 2 hours 45 minutes if you add Science. Writing is optional on the enhanced ACT, and most students skip it unless a college on their list asks for it.

How long is the ACT with writing?

English, Math, Reading and Writing take 2 hours 45 minutes of testing; with Science as well, 3 hours 25 minutes. Add the 15 minute break and the 5 minute break before the essay, and the full test with everything runs 3 hours 45 minutes. ACT's end time for that option is 1:00 p.m. online and 1:30 p.m. on paper.

How long is each section of the ACT?

English is 35 minutes for 50 questions, Math 50 minutes for 45 questions, Reading 40 minutes for 36 questions, Science 40 minutes for 40 questions, and the Writing essay 40 minutes.

How long is the ACT with extended time?

With time and a half, each section gets 50% more time: English 52.5, Math 75, Reading 60, Science 60 and Writing 60 minutes on ACT's accommodations timing sheet. That is 187.5 minutes for the three required sections and 307.5 with Science and Writing. Extended time has to be approved by ACT before test day.

How long is the new enhanced ACT?

The enhanced ACT is 2 hours 5 minutes for English, Math and Reading, with 131 questions. It is shorter than the old ACT because Science became optional and each section has fewer questions, so you get more time per question.

How long is the PreACT?

ACT lists the PreACT for grades 9 to 11 at 2 hours 40 minutes (160 minutes) from fall 2026, when it moves to the enhanced ACT blueprint, and PreACT 9 Secure at 155 minutes. Only Math is shorter than on the ACT (45 minutes instead of 50); English, Reading and Science keep the ACT times, and Science is included. Your school sets the day and the start time.

How many breaks do you get on the ACT?

One short break after the second test, Math (15 minutes on ACT's timing sheet), and a 5 minute break before the essay if you take Writing. You cannot use a phone or leave the test site during a break.

How do I pace myself and stay focused for the whole ACT?

Set a time per question: about 42 seconds in English, 67 in Math, 67 in Reading and 60 in Science. Take at least one full practice test under real timing, with the break after Math, so the 2 hours 5 minutes (or 2 hours 45 minutes with Science) feels familiar on test day. Bring a snack and water for the break, and if a question stalls you, mark a best guess and move on, because a wrong answer costs nothing.

What time does the ACT start and end?

ACT tells you to be inside the test center by 8:00 a.m. for check in; late arrivals are not admitted. The ACT without options ends at 11:05 a.m. online and 11:25 a.m. on paper, so plan on about 3 hours 5 minutes to 3 hours 25 minutes at the center.
