What Is a Good PSAT Score? 2026 Guide by Grade
By Muhammad Afzaal Afzal, updated , 4 minute read
Quick answer
For an 11th grader, about 980 beats half of PSAT takers and 1280 or more is in the top 10%. For a 10th grader the middle score is about 900. National Merit cutoffs are higher and differ by state.

Four module scores give your total and Selection Index.
Good PSAT scores by grade: freshman, sophomore and junior
- Juniors: 980 is the middle; 1280 and up is the top 10% of 11th grade test takers (91st percentile at 1300).
- Sophomores: 900 is the middle; 1100 is the 82nd percentile and 1200 the 92nd.
- Freshmen: most 9th graders take the PSAT 8/9, which has its own 240 to 1440 scale; a PSAT/NMSQT taken in 9th grade is practice only.
A good PSAT score depends on your grade and your goal: practice for the SAT, or National Merit recognition in junior year. Have a practice score? Estimate your PSAT total, percentile and Selection Index with the calculator.
PSAT score range, percentiles and average by grade
The PSAT/NMSQT runs from 320 to 1520 (160 to 760 per section). The middle junior scores about 980 and the middle sophomore about 900; the table shows the percentile of each total for both grades, against all students and against test takers.

National Merit cutoffs
Only the junior year test counts. For the class of 2027, the Commended cutoff was 208 and the state Semifinalist cutoffs ranged from 208 to 223, for example Texas 219, California 220, New York 220, Florida 216, Wyoming 208. These are compiled from the September letters by Compass Education Group; NMSC does not publish them in advance. The PSAT calculator compares your Selection Index with your state's cutoff.
National Merit semifinalist cutoffs by state
Every state's Semifinalist Selection Index cutoff for the class of 2027, with the class of 2026 beside it so you can see how much a cutoff moves in one year. NMSC does not publish these numbers, so treat them as an estimate compiled from the September Semifinalist letters, not an official list. Students in U.S. territories and studying abroad have their own cutoffs, listed at the end.

What to do with your score
Your score report links to a personalized practice plan on Khan Academy. Look at the two section scores: the Selection Index counts Reading and Writing twice, so for National Merit that section moves the index faster. For the SAT itself both count the same, and the SAT calculator shows what each extra right answer is worth.

What is the average PSAT score for 10th and 11th graders?
The middle junior who takes the PSAT/NMSQT scores about 980 and the middle sophomore about 900, on the College Board's user percentiles. So the middle 11th grader scores about 80 points more than the middle 10th grader.
What is the PSAT score range?
Each section is scored from 160 to 760 and the total from 320 to 1520. The National Merit Selection Index, (2 x Reading and Writing + Math) / 10, runs from 48 to 228.
What is a good PSAT score for a sophomore?
Anything above 900 is above the middle of 10th graders, and 1100 is at the 82nd percentile of sophomore test takers. The sophomore score does not count for National Merit; use it to plan what to practice before junior year.
What were the National Merit cutoffs for the class of 2027?
For the class of 2027 the national Commended cutoff was a Selection Index of 208 and state Semifinalist cutoffs ran from 208 to 223. That usually means a total around 1400 or higher, depending on the section split and your state.
What is a good PSAT 8/9 or PSAT 10 score?
The PSAT 10 uses the same 320 to 1520 scale as the PSAT/NMSQT, so the 10th grade columns in the table above are a fair guide: about 900 is the middle and 1100 is at the 82nd percentile of sophomore test takers. The PSAT 8/9 has its own 240 to 1440 scale. Neither test counts for National Merit.
Is the PSAT harder than the SAT?
Not in the way most students fear. The PSAT/NMSQT is built like the SAT, with the same two sections and the same kinds of questions, and the College Board puts every test in the SAT Suite on one common score scale, so a 500 section score means the same level of skill on both. The PSAT range simply stops at 1520 instead of 1600 because it is written for 10th and 11th graders. Most students score higher on the SAT later because they have had another year of classes and practice, not because the SAT is easier.
When do PSAT scores come out?
About two weeks after the school sends in the answers, so the date depends on your school, not on your test day. PSAT score release dates for the October 2026 window: answers sent by 9, 23 or 30 October reach students on 22 October, 5 November or 12 November in their College Board account; schools see them in their score portal two days earlier.
