How this calculator works
Type an ACT composite and you get the SAT total range it compares with, plus the single value ACT lists; type an SAT total and you get the ACT composite whose range holds it. Both directions read the same official table from the 2018 ACT and College Board concordance study, the one admissions offices use when a student sends one test and the college's range is published in the other.
A concordance is a comparison, not a prediction: it says a 28 ACT and a 1310 SAT carry the same weight, not that a 28 scorer would get a 1310. Section scores are not converted one to one either, which is why this page sticks to the composite and the total.
ACT to SAT conversion table (official concordance)
Every ACT composite from 36 down to 9 with the SAT range it compares with and the single SAT value ACT prints beside it. Each row has its own link, so a single composite lands on its own line. Read it the other way for SAT to ACT: find the range that holds your total.

SAT to ACT conversion
Going the other way, find the SAT range that holds your total. A 1500 SAT converts to a 34 ACT, a 1400 SAT converts to a 31 ACT, a 1300 SAT converts to a 28 ACT and a 1200 SAT converts to a 25 ACT. Switch the converter above to SAT to ACT for any total from 590 to 1600.
How to use a conversion when you have both scores
Colleges that accept either test compare them with this table, so the question is which score sits higher once both are on one scale. A 1350 SAT and a 29 ACT (1330 to 1350) are the same score; a 1400 SAT beats a 30 ACT (1360 to 1380). Convert, then look up each college's middle 50% range for the test you plan to send. Still deciding which test to take? Estimate a practice result on the ACT score calculator and the SAT score calculator, convert the lower one here, and the gap tells you which test suits you.

What do top ACT scores equal on the SAT?
An ACT composite of 34 compares with an SAT total of 1490 to 1520, and the single value the official table lists is 1500. A 33 compares with 1450 to 1480, with 1460 as its single value. One step up, a 35 matches 1530 to 1560 (1540) and a 36 matches 1570 to 1600 (1590). Each composite from 16 to 36 also has its own score page with its percentile.
What do ACT scores of 30 to 32 equal on the SAT?
A 32 compares with 1420 to 1440, with 1430 as the single value. A 30 compares with 1360 to 1380, with 1370 as its single value, and the 31 between them with 1390 to 1410 (1400). Use the table above to find any composite from 9 to 36.
How do I convert an SAT score to ACT?
Find the SAT range that holds your total. A 1500 sits in 1490 to 1520, so it compares with a 34; a 1200 sits in 1200 to 1220, a 25; a 1050 sits in 1030 to 1050, a 20. Switch the converter above to SAT to ACT and type your total for the exact row.
Is the ACT to SAT conversion official?
Yes. The table comes from the 2018 concordance study published jointly by ACT and the College Board, the one both test makers and colleges use. ACT says it is not revised every year, and the digital SAT kept the same 400 to 1600 scale, so the 2018 tables still apply.
Does converting my score tell me how I would do on the other test?
No. The concordance says which scores mean about the same to colleges; it does not predict your score on a test you have not taken. The two tests reward different skills (the ACT has an optional Science section and a faster pace), so students who take both often land a few points apart. Take a practice test of each if you are choosing between them.
Which score should I send if I took both tests?
Convert both into one scale with the table and send the higher one, unless a college asks for all scores. If the two match, send the one that sits higher in that college's middle 50% range, which colleges publish in their common data set.
Is there an ACT to SAT conversion for section scores?
The 2018 study also published ACT Math to SAT Math and ACT English plus Reading to SAT Reading and Writing tables, but colleges compare composites and totals. This page keeps the composite and total table; the SAT and ACT calculators show your section scores and percentiles.
