How to calculate graduation year
This graduation year calculator works two ways. Pick the grade you or your child are in now and it counts the grades left: a high school graduation year is the year this school year ends plus 12 minus the grade. Or enter a birthday and your state's kindergarten cutoff, and it finds the fall kindergarten starts and adds 13 school years. Either way you get the class of year, the grade this school year, the school years left and an estimated college graduation year.
School years change on July 1 in this graduation calculator, the gap between one year's last day and the next year's first. The cutoff starts at September 1, the most common state date; change it to match your state, or mark a child who started kindergarten a year late or early.
class of = (start year of this school year) + 13 minus grade
Graduation year example
Your child was born on March 3, 2015 and your state uses the common September 1 kindergarten cutoff. What year will your child graduate high school?
- Fifth birthday: March 3, 2020, on or before September 1, 2020, so kindergarten starts in fall 2020.
- Kindergarten plus grades 1 to 12 is 13 school years: 2020 + 13 = 2033.
- In the 2026 to 27 school year: 2026 + 13 minus 2033 = grade 6, 6th grade, with 7 school years left counting this one.
Class of 2033: high school graduation in May or June 2033, and about 2037 for a four year college degree.

Graduation calculator by birthday
A birthday decides the class through the kindergarten cutoff: a child starts kindergarten in the fall they are 5 on or before the cutoff, and graduates 13 school years later. With September 1, the birthdays below make up each class. A child born on the cutoff day is the youngest in the class; a child born the next day is the oldest in the class after it.
| Born | Class |
|---|---|
| September 2, 2008 to September 1, 2009 | Class of 2027 |
| September 2, 2009 to September 1, 2010 | Class of 2028 |
| September 2, 2010 to September 1, 2011 | Class of 2029 |
| September 2, 2011 to September 1, 2012 | Class of 2030 |
| September 2, 2012 to September 1, 2013 | Class of 2031 |
| September 2, 2013 to September 1, 2014 | Class of 2032 |
| September 2, 2014 to September 1, 2015 | Class of 2033 |
| September 2, 2015 to September 1, 2016 | Class of 2034 |

| September 2, 2017 to September 1, 2018 | Class of 2036 |
| September 2, 2018 to September 1, 2019 | Class of 2037 |
| September 2, 2019 to September 1, 2020 | Class of 2038 |
| September 2, 2020 to September 1, 2021 | Class of 2039 |
On time kindergarten start. A later state cutoff, an early start or a year held back moves a birthday to another class; the calculator above handles all three.
Kindergarten cutoff dates by state
Every state sets its own cutoff, and some leave it to districts. In the NCES State Education Reforms table of kindergarten entrance rules (2018 data), September 1 is the most common date: 18 states, including California, Texas and Florida, set a birthday on or by September 1, and 3 more (Arizona, New Mexico and West Virginia) say before September 1. The dates run from July 31 (Hawaii and Nebraska) to October 15 (Maine), and Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania left the date to each district. States change their rules from time to time; the Education Commission of the States 50-State Comparison of K-3 policies (September 2026) tracks the current ones, and your district's enrollment page has the final word.
The cutoff only matters for fall birthdays. A child born October 10, 2020 is the class of 2039 with a September 1 cutoff but the class of 2038 with October 15. Pick your state's date under Change and the graduation year updates. Sources checked October 23, 2026.
Graduation date calculator: when is graduation day?
Most US high schools hold graduation in May or June, after the last week of classes. Districts that start in early August often finish in late May; districts that start after Labor Day usually graduate in June. The exact graduation date comes from your district's school calendar, which is normally posted a year or more ahead, so this graduating year calculator gives the year and the usual months rather than a day.
College graduation year
A full time bachelor's degree takes about four years, so the college class is the high school class plus 4: the class of 2030 in high school is the college class of 2034. Choose a college year as the current grade to work back from college. Credits, a change of major, transfers and part time terms shift the date; to track the grades that get you there, use the college GPA calculator.
Questions and answers
What year will my child graduate high school?
Add the grades still ahead to this school year. A child in kindergarten in 2026 to 27 graduates in 2039, a 5th grader in 2034 and an 8th grader in 2031. If your child has not started school yet, use the birthday mode: it applies your state's kindergarten cutoff and adds 13 school years.
How do I calculate my graduation year?
Class of = the year the current school year ends + (12 minus your grade). In 2026 to 27 the school year ends in 2027, so a 10th grader graduates in 2027 + 2 = 2029. Kindergarten counts as grade 0, so it is 12 years after the year kindergarten ends.
What year will I graduate if I was born in 2012?
With the common September 1 cutoff, a 2012 birthday from January 1 to September 1 belongs to the class of 2030, and September 2 to December 31 to the class of 2031. Born in 2016: class of 2034 or 2035 on the same rule. A state with a later cutoff moves fall birthdays a year earlier.
What does class of mean?
Your class is the calendar year you graduate from high school. Schools, yearbooks, sports recruiting and college applications all use it, so the class of 2030 means the students who finish 12th grade in the spring of 2030, whatever their age.
Do you graduate high school at 17 or 18?
Most students are 18 at graduation; students with summer birthdays near the cutoff are still 17. With a September 1 cutoff, everyone born from about June to September 1 graduates at 17 and turns 18 that summer.
When does the calculator move to the next grade?
On July 1. US districts start between late July and early September and end between late May and late June, so July 1 is the one day that is never inside a school year. From July 1 on, the calculator counts the new school year; you can also pick last year or next year in Change.
What if my child was held back, skipped a grade or started kindergarten late?
Use the current grade mode with the grade your child is actually in, or in birthday mode choose a year later or a year early. A child born October 10, 2020 is the class of 2039 with a September 1 cutoff and the class of 2040 if kindergarten starts a year later.
When will I graduate college?
About four years after high school for a full time bachelor's degree: the high school class of 2027 is the college class of 2031. An associate degree takes about two years, and part time study, transfers or a gap year add time, so the calculator labels the college year an estimate.
