How this high school GPA calculator works
Type a letter grade for each class and mark the Honors, AP, IB or dual enrollment classes in the Level column. The calculator shows your weighted GPA, with the bonus your school adds for harder classes, and your unweighted GPA on the plain 4.0 scale right under it, so it works as a weighted GPA calculator and an unweighted one at the same time, without entering anything twice. It covers 9th to 12th grade, one year or all four.
The weighting rule defaults to the common one (Honors +0.5, AP and IB +1.0). If your district caps the bonus or uses a different scale, pick another rule or switch the grade scale, and the source of every preset is shown under the result. Turn on credits if your transcript weights a year long class more than a semester one, add your previous GPA to see your cumulative number, and set a goal GPA to find out what next year's grades need to average. To see how many semesters it takes to raise your GPA in high school, use the raise GPA calculator.
Weighted GPA example
A junior takes AP Chemistry (A-), Honors English (A), Spanish III (B+) and US History (B-), all one credit, with the common +0.5 Honors and +1.0 AP bonus.
- AP Chemistry: A- is 3.70 plus 1 for AP = 4.70 points x 1 credit = 4.70 quality points.
- Honors English: A is 4.00 plus 0.5 for Honors = 4.50 points x 1 credit = 4.50 quality points.
- Spanish III: B+ is 3.30 points x 1 credit = 3.30 quality points.
- US History: B- is 2.70 points x 1 credit = 2.70 quality points.
- Add them up: 15.20 quality points over 4 credits.
- Divide: 15.20 / 4 = 3.8000, which rounds to 3.80.
The weighted GPA is 3.80 and the unweighted GPA is 3.43. Colleges often look at both.
How to calculate weighted and unweighted GPA
unweighted GPA = sum of grade points / number of classes; weighted GPA = sum of (grade points + level bonus) / number of classes
Example: an A in AP Biology, a B+ in Honors English and an A- in Algebra II are (4.0 + 3.3 + 3.7) / 3 = 3.67 unweighted and (5.0 + 3.8 + 3.7) / 3 = 4.17 weighted. Your transcript shows which numbers your school reports; the calculator above shows both for every class you add. Straight As are a 4.0 GPA unweighted, however many AP classes you take.
The table shows every letter on the common scale with its unweighted points and the weighted points for Honors and for AP, IB or dual enrollment classes.
| Letter | Percent | Unweighted | Honors | AP, IB, dual enrollment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A+ or A | 93 to 100 | 4.0 | 4.5 | 5.0 |
| A- | 90 to 92 | 3.7 | 4.2 | 4.7 |
| B+ | 87 to 89 | 3.3 | 3.8 | 4.3 |
| B | 83 to 86 | 3.0 | 3.5 | 4.0 |
| B- | 80 to 82 | 2.7 | 3.2 | 3.7 |
| C+ | 77 to 79 | 2.3 | 2.8 | 3.3 |
| C | 73 to 76 | 2.0 | 2.5 | 3.0 |
| C- | 70 to 72 | 1.7 | 2.2 | 2.7 |
| D+ | 67 to 69 | 1.3 | 1.8 | 2.3 |
| D | 63 to 66 | 1.0 | 1.5 | 2.0 |
| D- | 60 to 62 | 0.7 | 1.2 | 1.7 |
| F | below 60 | 0.0 | 0.0 | 0.0 |

Weighted vs unweighted GPA: which one colleges use
Your unweighted GPA treats every class the same on the 4.0 scale. Your weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder classes, usually 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP, IB and dual enrollment, so it can run to 5.0. If your school ranks students, it usually uses GPA, often weighted; colleges look at both and many recalculate a GPA from your core classes with their own bonus, which is why this calculator always shows the two numbers together. A 3.6 unweighted with six AP classes tells a different story from a 3.6 with none, and admissions readers know it.

How do I calculate my high school GPA?
Give each class a letter grade, look up its points on your school's scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0), add the points and divide by the number of classes. If your school counts credits, multiply each class's points by its credits first and divide by the total credits. This calculator does both and shows every step in the table under the result.
What is the difference between a weighted and an unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA treats every class the same and tops out at 4.0. A weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder classes, most often 0.5 for Honors and 1.0 for AP, IB and dual enrollment, so an A in AP Biology counts 5.0 instead of 4.0. Colleges usually see both, and many recalculate your GPA with their own rule, so the two numbers here are a planning tool, not a promise.
How are AP and Honors classes weighted?
Under the common rule, a passing grade in an AP class gets 1.0 extra point and one in Honors gets 0.5, compared with the same grade in a regular class, so an AP A counts 5.0 and an Honors A 4.5. Mark the level of each class above and the calculator shows the bonus per class; the raise GPA calculator shows how much those bonuses move your GPA over the years.
What is a good GPA in high school?
The average high school GPA in the US is 3.11 unweighted (NAEP, class of 2019), so a 3.5 is well above it. Each college publishes the GPA range of its admitted students in its Common Data Set or class profile, so compare your unweighted GPA with the colleges on your list. Your school's grading scale and how many weighted classes it offers change what those numbers mean, so counselors compare students within the same school.
What is the average GPA in high school?
3.11 for the class of 2019, according to the NAEP High School Transcript Study published in March 2022, up from 3.00 in 2009. That figure is unweighted, so compare it with your unweighted GPA: a weighted 3.6 can come from an unweighted 2.6 when every class carries the AP bonus, and that is still below 3.11. Colleges recalculate GPAs their own way, so the unweighted number on the 4.0 scale is the fair comparison.
How do I calculate my GPA with AP classes?
Mark each AP class with the AP level in the row and turn Weighted on. On the common weighting an AP A counts 5.0 instead of 4.0 and an AP B 4.0 instead of 3.0. The calculator shows the weighted and the unweighted GPA side by side, because colleges ask for both and recalculate with their own bonuses.
Does a 5.0 GPA scale exist?
Yes. Schools that add 1.0 for AP and IB classes report weighted GPAs on a 5.0 scale, so a student with straight As in all AP classes has a 5.0. Some districts add more than 1.0 or use a 6.0 or 12 point scale; pick the matching weighting rule above or compare the unweighted number, which is always on the 4.0 scale.
Do colleges look at weighted or unweighted GPA?
Both appear on your transcript and most admissions offices look at your course list alongside the numbers. Many colleges, including the University of California system, recalculate a GPA with their own weighting cap, so a high weighted GPA from a school that weights generously does not transfer one to one. Use the unweighted GPA to compare yourself with national averages and the weighted one to see the payoff of harder classes.
Is a 93 a 4.0 GPA in high school?
On the common scale with pluses and minuses, 93 to 100% is an A, so a 93 is a 4.0 unweighted, or 5.0 in an AP class. On a plain 10 point scale any 90 or above is an A. Schools on a 7 point scale also start an A at 93.
Is a 3.7 GPA an A or a B?
A 3.7 is an A- on the standard 4.0 scale, so it sits between a B+ (3.3) and an A (4.0). As an unweighted high school GPA it means mostly As with a few Bs, which is well above the 3.11 US average.
