How middle school GPA works
Pick a grade for each class, or type the percentage from your report card, and your GPA appears on the 4.0 scale as you go. Middle schools usually count every class the same and skip pluses and minuses, so that is how the calculator starts. If your school does use A- and B+ grades or gives some classes more credit, change the scale or turn on credits and the math follows your report card.
The table under the result shows the points for every class, so you can see which grade is holding the average down and what one letter grade higher in that class would do. Add the GPA from an earlier year in the previous GPA box to see your overall number across grades.

Middle school GPA example
A 7th grader has an A in Math, a B in Science, an A in English and a C in Social studies, on a 4.0 scale without pluses and minuses.
- Math: A is 4.00 points x 1 class = 4.00 quality points.
- Science: B is 3.00 points x 1 class = 3.00 quality points.
- English: A is 4.00 points x 1 class = 4.00 quality points.
- Social studies: C is 2.00 points x 1 class = 2.00 quality points.
- Add them up: 13.00 quality points over 4 classes.
- Divide: 13.00 / 4 = 3.2500, which rounds to 3.25.
The GPA is 3.25, a solid B+ average.
Questions and answers
How do I calculate my GPA in middle school?
Turn each class grade into points (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0), add the points and divide by the number of classes. Four As and two Bs are 22 points over 6 classes, a 3.67 GPA. Most middle schools do not use credits or pluses and minuses, so the calculator starts on the plain 4.0 scale; switch the scale if your report card shows an A- or B+.
Does middle school GPA matter for high school or college?
Colleges never see your middle school grades; they look at your high school transcript starting in 9th grade. Middle school GPA can matter for placement in honors or advanced classes in 9th grade, for some magnet and private school applications and for honor roll, so it is worth knowing where you stand.
What is a good GPA for 6th, 7th or 8th grade?
A 3.0 is a B average and a 3.5 or higher is honor roll territory at most schools. Anything at or above 3.0 shows you are ready for regular high school classes, and a 3.5 to 4.0 is the range schools look for when placing students into honors courses.
My report card shows percentages. How do I turn them into a GPA?
Choose Change, set Grades as to Percent and type the number for each class. The calculator converts each percentage to a letter with the 10 point bands most schools use (90 to 100 is an A, 80 to 89 a B and so on) and then to points. If your school uses a 7 point scale, where 93 and up is an A, pick that band set instead.
Is this a jr high GPA calculator too?
Yes. Jr high, junior high and middle school grades work the same way: each class gets a letter or a percentage, the letter becomes points on the 4.0 scale and the points are averaged. Most junior highs do not use credits or weights, so leave both off unless your report card shows them.
Do electives like PE, art and band count in my GPA?
At most middle schools yes: every graded class counts the same, so an A in art raises your GPA as much as an A in math. Some schools leave pass/fail classes out or weight core subjects more. Add or remove rows above to match the classes on your report card.
Is a 3.7 GPA bad in middle school?
No. A 3.7 is an A- average, honor roll territory at most middle schools and well above the 3.0 that shows you are ready for high school classes.
Is a 5.0 GPA good in middle school?
A 5.0 is only possible on a weighted scale, where advanced or honors classes count for an extra point, so it means straight As in advanced classes. Most middle schools report an unweighted 4.0 scale, where a 4.0 is the top. Check how your school weights classes before comparing GPAs with friends at other schools.
