How this calculator works
The digital SAT is adaptive. Each section has two modules, and your first module decides whether your second module is harder or easier. The harder path is the one that reaches the top scores, so two students with the same number of correct answers can end up with different scores. The College Board does not publish a raw to scaled table for the real test.
What it does publish is an official conversion table for the paper version of its practice tests. On a paper practice test, enter your raw scores and you get the official range. For a digital practice test, enter your correct answers per module and your module 2 route: we place your percent correct on that official table and narrow it with the route, and the result is labeled as an estimate. The table under the result also shows what one more correct answer is worth in each section. Used as an SAT score predictor, it turns the answers you got right into the scaled score the College Board's own practice table gives.
Worked example
On a digital SAT practice test a student gets 21 and 19 right in the two Reading and Writing modules (of 27 each) and 17 and 15 in the two Math modules (of 22 each), without knowing which second module they had.
- Reading and Writing: 40 of 54 right maps to 570 to 630 on the practice test's scoring table.
- Math: 32 of 44 right maps to 560 to 620.
- Total: 1130 to 1250, shown as about 1190.
Estimated total: about 1190 (1130 to 1250). It is a range because the real test is adaptive and each form is scaled a little differently.
Is your SAT score good?
Pick the total closest to yours for its percentile among SAT takers and all US juniors and seniors, the ACT score it matches and what the next step takes. Every score from 900 to 1600 has a page; the strip on each one links its neighbours 10 points apart.
How SAT scoring works: raw score to 1600
Each section has two modules. The first is the same for everyone; the second is easier or harder depending on how you did on the first. Your raw score is simply the number of right answers across both modules, and the scaled score depends on that raw score and which second module you got. The harder module unlocks the top of the scale, which is why two students with the same raw score can land 100 points apart.
total = Reading and Writing (200 to 800) + Math (200 to 800)
The percentile beside the total answers "is this good" in one number, and the ACT to SAT conversion shows the ACT composite it matches if you are deciding which test to send.
SAT test structure: sections, questions and time
The digital SAT has 98 questions in 2 hours 14 minutes of testing, with a 10 minute break between Reading and Writing and Math. Each section is split into two equal modules, and each section is scored on its own 200 to 800 scale.
| Section | Modules | Questions | Minutes | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reading and Writing | 2 | 54 | 64 | 200 to 800 |
| Math | 2 | 44 | 70 | 200 to 800 |
| Total | 4 | 98 | 134, plus a 10 minute break | 400 to 1600 |

Questions and answers
How is the digital SAT scored?
The SAT has two sections, Reading and Writing and Math, each scored from 200 to 800, for a total of 400 to 1600. Each section has two modules, and the second module is harder or easier depending on how you did in the first. The College Board scores the test with item response theory, so harder questions can count more and there is no fixed raw to scaled table for the real test.
How accurate is this SAT score calculator?
For a paper practice test the result comes straight from the College Board's official conversion table, which gives a low and a high score for every raw score. For a digital practice test the result is an estimate: your percent correct is placed on that official table and narrowed by your module 2 route. Your Bluebook practice score report is always the more exact number.
How do I know if I got the harder second module?
There is no label in the app, but students usually notice: the harder module has more difficult questions and longer passages. Bluebook practice score reports also show your answers question by question. If you are not sure, leave the route on Not sure and the calculator shows the full range.
How many questions can I miss for a 1400 or a 1500?
It depends on the test form and on which second modules you get. On the official Practice Test 11 paper table you can miss up to 9 Reading and Writing questions and 6 Math questions and still score 700 or more in each section (table midpoints), and each extra miss near the top costs about 10 to 20 points. Enter your counts and the table shows what one more correct answer is worth.
Is my SAT score good?
Pick your total in the "Is your SAT score good?" list on this page: every score from 900 to 1600 has its own page with both percentiles, the ACT score it matches and what the next 50 points take. As a quick guide, the middle SAT taker scores about 1020 and the top quarter starts at 1200.
What are SAT percentiles, and what is mine?
A percentile is the share of students at or below your total. The result above shows two: the SAT user percentile (everyone who took the test) and the nationally representative percentile (all US 11th and 12th graders, which runs higher). A 1200 is where the top quarter of SAT takers starts and 1360 the top 10%. The guide to a good SAT score has the full SAT percentiles chart.
Do colleges see every SAT score I send?
You choose which test dates to send with Score Choice, and many colleges superscore, combining your best Reading and Writing and your best Math from different dates. A few colleges ask for all scores, so check their testing policy before you send.
Is a 1480 SAT or a 34 ACT better?
A 34 ACT is slightly stronger. The official ACT and College Board concordance tables match a 34 ACT with about a 1500 SAT, and a 1480 SAT with a 33 ACT. Both are very strong scores; send the one that sits higher in each college's middle 50% range.
