Schools differ on rounding, on whether the final can replace a quarter, and on the split itself; your syllabus or student handbook has the rule. Reference: 10 point scale (checked Oct 2026). Sources and assumptions
Need a quarter grade first? Work it out with the grade calculator. Only the final is left? The final grade calculator does one exam at a time.
How to calculate a semester grade
A semester grade is a weighted average of your grading periods and, at most schools, a final exam. Pick the split your school uses, type each quarter or trimester grade as a percentage, and the result updates as you go. The table shows how many points each period adds, so you can see which one is pulling the grade up or down.
Final still ahead? Leave its grade empty and the calculator turns into a planner: it shows your grade so far, the score you need on the final for the semester grade you want, and the score for every letter at once. When the exam is done, type the score and the planner becomes your semester grade.
Semester grade example
Your school uses 40/40/20: Quarter 1 is 88%, Quarter 2 is 84% and the final exam is 20%.
- Quarters so far: 88 x 0.4 + 84 x 0.4 = 35.2 + 33.6 = 68.8 points out of 80, an 86% average.
- For a 90% semester grade: (90 minus 68.8) / 0.2 = 106% on the final.
- If you score 91% on the final: 68.8 + 91 x 0.2 = 87%.
You need 106% on the final for a 90%; a 91% on the final gives an 87% (B) semester grade.
Semester grade formula
semester = Q1 x w1 + Q2 x w2 + exam x w3 (weights as decimals, adding to 1)
Questions and answers
How do I calculate my semester grade?
Multiply each quarter grade by its weight, add the final exam times its weight, and divide by the total weight. With the common 40/40/20 split, an 88% and a 92% in the quarters plus a 75% on the final give (88 x 40 + 92 x 40 + 75 x 20) / 100 = 87%, a B. The table under the result shows this for your numbers.
What is the 40/40/20 rule for semester grades?
Each quarter counts 40% of the semester grade and the final exam counts 20%. It is the most common split in US high schools, but not the only one: some schools use 45/45/10, some have no final (50/50), and trimester schools weigh three terms equally. Pick the split from the chips or type your school's weights.
What do I need on the final to get an A for the semester?
Leave the final exam grade empty and set the semester grade you want. With 88% and 92% in two quarters at 40% each and a final worth 20%, you have 90% so far and need exactly 90% on the final to keep an A (90%). For a 93% you would need 105%, which is out of reach without extra credit.
Can I calculate a semester grade with quarter grades only?
Yes. Choose the 50/50 split or set the final weight to 0 and the calculator averages the quarters by their weights. If your school rounds each quarter grade before combining them, enter the rounded quarter grades, not the exact percentages.
How is a semester grade different from a quarter grade?
A quarter grade is the average of the assignments inside that grading period. The semester grade combines the quarter grades, and usually a final exam, with fixed weights set by the school. So a strong second quarter can lift a weak first quarter, and the final can move the result either way by its weight.
Does the semester grade use percentages or letters?
The math works on percentages. Enter each quarter as a percentage; the result shows the semester percentage and the letter grade on the scale you pick. If your school only gives letters per quarter, use the middle of each letter's range as an estimate and expect the result to be approximate.
How do I calculate my semester average?
Multiply each quarter grade by its weight, add the semester exam times its weight, and add them up. Quarters 88 and 92 at 40% each and an exam of 85 at 20%: 35.2 + 36.8 + 17 = 89%. If your school averages the quarters first and then adds the exam, the result is the same as long as the two quarters have equal weight.
What is a semester test, and how much does it count?
The exam at the end of a semester, sometimes called the semester final or midterm in a year long class. Common weights are 10%, 15% and 20% of the semester grade, with the quarters sharing the rest (40/40/20 is the classic split). Your student handbook or syllabus gives the exact number; type it in and the calculator does the rest. Use this page as a semester test calculator: leave the exam grade empty and it shows the score you need on the test for each letter grade.
What if my weights do not add up to 100%?
The calculator still works: it divides by the weights you entered, so the result is the weighted average of those parts. A note under the inputs tells you the total. Check your syllabus or student handbook, because the semester split is set by the school, not the teacher, in most districts.
