How to calculate what you need on the final
This final exam calculator works backward from the grade you want. Your course grade after the final is a weighted average: your current grade counts for everything except the final, and the final counts for its own weight. So the score you need is the goal minus the part you already have, divided by the final's weight. Enter your current grade, the weight from your syllabus and the grade you want, and you get the exact score to aim for, plus the score needed for every letter grade at once. It works the same for high school and college finals.
Already took the exam? Switch to Grade after final, type your score and see the course grade it gives you. Does your class work differently? Under Change settings you can make the final count as a test, let it replace your lowest test, switch to a points class, or type your current grade as a letter or as points. If the result says out of reach, the table shows the best grade you can still finish with, so you can plan your study time around a goal that is really possible. Just trying to pass? Set your school's passing mark as the goal; the passing grade guide shows whether that is a D at 60%, a 70, or a C for your major.
Final exam example
You have 83% before the final, you want 85% in the class and the final is worth 25%.
- The part you already have counts 75%: 83 x 0.75 = 62.25.
- The goal minus that part: 85 minus 62.25 = 22.75 points must come from the final.
- Divide by the final's weight: 22.75 / 0.25 = 91%.
- Check: 62.25 + 91 x 0.25 = 85%.
You need 91% on the final. With 100% you would finish at 87.25%; with a 0 you would still have 62.25%.
Final exam grade formula
needed = (goal minus current x (1 minus weight)) / weight
That is the whole calculation by hand. Reverse it to find your grade after the final: course grade = current x (1 minus weight) + final score x weight. The same two lines handle a midterm, a semester exam or a state end of course test, because each is just an exam with a weight. Only know your grade as a letter or as points like 176/200? Set Current grade as to Letter or points: a letter reads as the middle of its band on your scale (a B on the 10 point scale is 85%), and 176/200 reads as 88%.
How much the final's weight changes what you need
The same 83% going in can mean an easy final or an impossible one, depending on the weight. Here is the score you need for an 85% at each common weight, with the grade you would finish with after a 0 and after a 100. A heavier final is riskier, but it is also the only way to climb far. The calculator's details panel shows this table for your own grade and goal.
| Final weight | With a 0 | With a 100 | Needed for 85% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10% | 74.7% | 84.7% | 103% (out of reach) |
| 15% | 70.55% | 85.55% | 96.33% |

Final test grade calculator: when the final counts as a test
Some teachers do not give the final its own slice of the grade. It goes into the Tests category, sometimes counted twice. Choose Counts as a test under Change settings and the calculator works out the final's real share for you: enter the tests weight, how many tests you have taken, their average and how many tests the final counts as.
Example: tests are 60% of your grade, you have 4 tests averaging 78, your grade is 82% and the final counts as 2 tests. The final then carries 60 x 2 / (4 + 2) = 20% of the whole grade, and every point it beats your test average by adds 0.2 points to your grade. For an 85%: 78 + (85 minus 82) / 0.2 = 93%. If the final counted as just 1 test it would carry only 12%, and the same 85% would take 103%, out of reach.
When the final replaces your lowest test
A common policy rewards a strong finish: if your final beats your lowest test, the final score takes that test's place, and the final still counts its own weight. Choose Also replaces my lowest test, enter the final's weight (0 if it only replaces), the tests weight and your test scores. The calculator shows the score you need with the replacement and what it would be without it.
Example: you have 84%, the final is worth 20%, tests are 50% of the grade and your four tests are 72, 88, 91 and 85. Without the replacement, an 88% needs 104%, out of reach. With it, a final above 72 also lifts your tests average by (final minus 72) / 4, so you need 93.33%. For an 85% the gap is smaller: 83.33% instead of 89%. If the score you need is not above your lowest test, nothing is replaced and the answer is the plain one.
Points-based classes: what the final is worth
If your teacher grades by total points instead of weighted categories, choose Points class under Change settings: enter the points you have earned, the points possible so far and what the final is worth.
Example: 631 of 700 points so far (90.14%) and a 150 point final, so the course totals 850 points and the final is 17.65% of it. A 90% needs 0.9 x 850 = 765 points, minus the 631 you have: 134 points on the final, 89.33% of it. An 80% needs only 49 points. Already took the final? Switch to Grade after final and type the points you scored.
Midterm and EOC calculator: same math, different weight
A midterm calculator, a quiz or unit test calculator and an end of course calculator all ask one question: what does an exam with a known weight do to a known average? Enter your grade going in, the weight from your syllabus (midterms are often 10% to 20%, semester exams 10% to 25%, college finals 20% to 40%) and the grade you want. For a semester built from two quarters plus an exam, the semester grade calculator takes the quarter grades separately so you do not have to average them first.
State end of course exams follow their own rule. In Florida the EOC in Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology 1 and US History is 30% of the final course grade (Florida Department of Education, standard diploma requirements), so an 80% going in and a goal of 85% needs 96.67% on the EOC. Other states and districts set their own share, so check your syllabus.

How do I calculate what I need on my final?
Take the grade you want, subtract your current grade times the share of the class that is not the final, and divide by the final's weight. With an 82% now, a final worth 20% and a goal of 85%: (85 minus 82 x 0.8) / 0.2 = 97%. The calculator shows this formula with your numbers under the result.
What if I need more than 100% on the final?
Then the goal is out of reach unless your teacher gives extra credit or curves the exam. The result tells you the best grade you can still finish with if you score 100%, and the table shows which lower grades are still possible so you can set a realistic target.
Can I fail the final and still pass the class?
Often yes. Switch to Grade after final and enter 0, or look at the table: if it says Already secured for a D (60%), even a zero keeps you passing. With a final worth 20%, a 75% average before the final stays at 60% with a zero.
How much is my final worth?
Your syllabus says. High school finals usually count 10% to 25% of the semester grade, and college finals often 20% to 40%. If your teacher puts the final inside the Tests category instead, open Change settings on the calculator and choose Counts as a test: it works out the final's share of the whole grade for you.
What is the difference between my current grade and my final grade?
Your current grade is your average before the final exam. Your final grade is the course grade after the final is added in. This calculator turns one into the other in both directions: what you need on the final, or what your course grade becomes once you know your score.
What if my final counts as a test?
Then it has no weight of its own: it joins your tests and changes the tests average. Open Change settings, choose Counts as a test and enter the tests weight, how many tests you have taken, their average and how many tests the final counts as. With tests at 60% of the grade, 4 tests averaging 78 and a final that counts as 2 tests, the final carries 60 x 2 / 6 = 20% of your grade, so going from 82% to 85% takes 93% on it.
What if the final replaces my lowest test?
Choose Also replaces my lowest test under Change settings and type your test scores. Many teachers swap the final score in for your lowest test when the final is higher, on top of the final's own weight. The calculator shows the score you need with the replacement and without it: with 84% now, a 20% final, tests worth 50% and a lowest test of 72 out of four, a goal of 88% needs 93.33% with the replacement instead of 104% without it.
Can I use this as a midterm calculator?
Yes. A midterm is a weighted exam like any other: enter your grade before the midterm as the current grade, the midterm's weight from the syllabus and the grade you want, and the result is the midterm score you need. After the exam, switch to Grade after final and type the score to see your new average. The math is identical.
Does it work for an EOC or a state end of course exam?
Yes, as long as the exam counts as a percentage of the course grade. Your state or district sets the weight. Florida, for example, counts the state EOC in Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology 1 and US History as 30% of the final course grade (Florida Department of Education, standard diploma requirements), while many other states leave the share to the district. Check your syllabus, then enter that weight and your current grade. If your district converts the EOC scale score to a grade first, enter the converted grade in the after the final mode.
How do I calculate my final grade with points?
Add the final's points to the points possible so far, multiply by the percent you want, and subtract the points you have earned. With 631 of 700 points so far and a 150 point final, a 90% needs 0.9 x 850 minus 631 = 134 points (89.33% of the final). Choose Points class under Change settings and the calculator does it for you, or type your current grade as 176/200 in the Letter or points setting.
What grade do I need on the final to pass a high school or college class?
Enter the passing mark as the grade you want (60% in most US schools, 70% in some districts and many colleges for a major). If the result is 0% or the table says Already secured, you pass even with a zero. With an 80% before a final worth 20% and a 60% pass mark, you can score 0 and finish at 64%. In college, a D usually earns the credit but many majors need a C (70%), so check your catalog.
How are final grades calculated?
As a weighted average of everything in the course, usually category by category: homework, quizzes, tests and the final each count a set share. The final grade calculator folds the final into your current average; the grade calculator builds the current average from the categories. Teachers who use total points add every point earned and divide by points possible instead.
How much is 20% of your final grade?
If your final exam is worth 20%, every 10 points you score on it moves your class grade by 2 points. For example, with an 85% before the final, a 95% on the final gives 87% and a 65% gives 81%. Enter your current grade and the weight to see the score you need for each letter.
