How this GPA calculator works
Pick your grade scale, type a grade for each class and, if your school uses them, the credits. The GPA updates as you type, and the table under the result shows the quality points for every class so you can check it against your transcript.
Choose Change to turn on Weighted for the Honors and AP bonus your school uses, or set Grades as to Percent and it works as a GPA calculator from percentage grades when your report card shows numbers instead of letters, and choose Combine with a previous GPA to combine this term with the GPA you already have. Your numbers stay in your browser, and the Share link puts them in the URL so you can send them to a parent or counselor.
GPA calculation example
Maya has four classes this term on the common 4.0 scale: English A (3 credits), Biology B+ (4 credits), Algebra II A- (3 credits) and Art C (2 credits).
- English: A is 4.00 points x 3 credits = 12.00 quality points.
- Biology: B+ is 3.30 points x 4 credits = 13.20 quality points.
- Algebra II: A- is 3.70 points x 3 credits = 11.10 quality points.
- Art: C is 2.00 points x 2 credits = 4.00 quality points.
- Add them up: 40.30 quality points over 12 credits.
- Divide: 40.30 / 12 = 3.3583, which rounds to 3.36.
Her GPA is 3.36.
How to calculate GPA from your grades, with or without credits
Here is how to find a GPA by hand, or to work out one for a report card: turn each grade into points, multiply by the class's credits if your school uses them, add the results and divide by the total.
GPA = (points1 x credits1 + points2 x credits2 + ...) / (credits1 + credits2 + ...)
An A (4.0) in a 3 credit class, a B+ (3.3) in a 4 credit class and a C (2.0) in a 3 credit class: 12 + 13.2 + 6 = 31.2 quality points over 10 credits, a 3.12 GPA. The calculator prints this line with your own classes under the result so you can check what your school posts. Need the semester added to an existing GPA? The cumulative GPA calculator takes your current GPA and hours first.
Wondering what your number means? The GPA scale shows every grade on the 4.0 scale and the highest GPA you can get, and each GPA has its own page, such as a 3.0, 3.5, 3.8 or a perfect 4.0 GPA. Want a higher number? The raise GPA calculator shows the grades you need next term and how many terms a goal takes.
The calculator above is a grade point calculator: each letter becomes the points in this table, and your GPA is their average. Only know a class's average percent? Find its row (an 85% is a B, 3.0 points), or set Grades as to Percent and use it as a GPA calculator from average grades.
| Letter | Percent | Points |
|---|---|---|
| A+ or A | 93 to 100 | 4.0 |
| A- | 90 to 92 | 3.7 |
| B+ | 87 to 89 | 3.3 |
| B | 83 to 86 | 3.0 |
| B- | 80 to 82 | 2.7 |
| C+ | 77 to 79 | 2.3 |
| C | 73 to 76 | 2.0 |
| C- | 70 to 72 | 1.7 |
| D+ | 67 to 69 | 1.3 |
| D | 63 to 66 | 1.0 |
| D- | 60 to 62 | 0.7 |
| F | below 60 | 0.0 |

Questions and answers
How is GPA calculated?
Each letter grade is worth a number of points on your school's scale (an A is 4.0, a B is 3.0 and so on). Multiply each grade's points by the class's credits to get quality points, add them up, and divide by the total credits. Without credits, every class counts the same and the GPA is the plain average of the grade points, which is all a GPA average calculator does.
Can I use this GPA calculator with no credits?
Yes, it works as a GPA calculator without credit hours. Choose Change and set Credits to Equal, and every class counts once, so your GPA is the plain average of your grade points: an A, a B+ and a B are (4.0 + 3.3 + 3.0) / 3 = 3.43. Keep Use credits only if your report card lists credits or credit hours for each class.
Should I use a weighted or unweighted GPA?
Use unweighted to compare with national averages and weighted to see the payoff of Honors and AP classes. Turn on Weighted above, or open the high school GPA calculator to see both numbers side by side.
What is a good GPA?
Anything above the 3.11 US high school average (NAEP, class of 2019) is above average, and 3.5 and up is strong at most schools. Every GPA from 0.0 to 4.0 has its own page with the letter, the percentage and what it takes to raise it: see the 3.0, 3.5 and 3.8 pages.
Can I add this term to the GPA I already have?
Choose Combine with a previous GPA under your classes, enter your GPA so far and the credits it covers, and the calculator combines it with this term. The result is credit weighted, not a plain average of the two GPAs: 3.22 over 15 credits plus 3.69 over 12 credits is 3.43, not 3.46. The cumulative GPA calculator does the same with your transcript hours and adds a goal mode.
What is a GPA, and what does GPA mean?
GPA means grade point average: every letter grade becomes points (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0 on the common scale), the points are averaged, weighted by credits where your school uses them. It is the one number colleges, scholarships and employers use to compare transcripts, which is why every grade you enter above shows its points next to it.
Can my GPA go above 4.0?
Yes, on a weighted scale. An unweighted GPA stops at 4.0, but with Honors at +0.5 and AP or IB at +1.0 a weighted GPA can reach 5.0; the GPA scale page shows the highest GPA on every common scale.
How do I check what my GPA is?
Your official GPA is on your student portal or unofficial transcript. To check it yourself, or to see what your GPA will be after this term, enter your classes above; the table under the result shows the points for each class so you can match it to your transcript line by line.
What is the average GPA?
High school graduates in the US averaged a 3.11 GPA in 2019 (NAEP High School Transcript Study, published March 2022), up from 3.00 in 2009. So a 3.0 is a B average and about typical, and a 3.5 or more puts you above most students.
Which GPA scale should I pick?
Most US high schools and colleges use the common 4.0 scale with A- at 3.7 and B+ at 3.3. Some colleges give A+ 4.33 or use thirds (3.67, 3.33); many middle schools skip pluses and minuses. Check your report card or student handbook and pick the matching preset; the source of each preset is shown under the result.
What GPA is an 80%, 85% or 93%?
On the standard 4.0 scale with pluses and minuses, a 93% or higher is an A (4.0), 90 to 92% an A- (3.7), 87 to 89% a B+ (3.3), 83 to 86% a B (3.0) and 80 to 82% a B- (2.7). So an 80% is about a 2.7, an 85% a 3.0 and a 93% a 4.0. Some schools use a 7 point scale instead, where an A starts at 93% and a 90% is only a B, so pick your school's scale in the calculator.
