Grade = right / questions x 100. Letters follow the scale you picked; your school's bands may differ. Every score on all three scales: out of 20 grading scale.

How to calculate a test grade
A test grade is the share of questions you got right. Type the number of questions and the number wrong (or right) and you get the percentage, the letter on your school's scale and what each question is worth. The chart beside the result is the classic easy grader: every possible score for a test of that length, so a teacher can grade a whole stack from one printout, and a student can check a quiz in two taps. It is the same online grader teachers know from the EZ grader wheel, without the ads over the chart.
Scales differ. The common 10 point scale makes 90 an A and 60 the lowest pass; the 7 point scale used in some districts starts an A at 93. Switch the scale in the grading options and the result and the easy grader chart beside it update, with the scale's source shown under the result. The score charts for each test length further down show all three scales at once. Did the whole class struggle? Paste every score into the grade curve calculator to add points, use a square root curve or curve to a target average.
Test grade example
A teacher grades a 40 question test where a student got 6 wrong.
- Right answers: 40 minus 6 = 34.
- Divide by the questions: 34 / 40 = 0.85.
- Times 100: 85%.
The test grade is 85%, a B on the 10 point scale. Each wrong answer costs 2.5 points on this test.
Score out of 10, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50 or 60: one chart per test length
Looking up one score? Pick your test length. Each chart lists every score with its percent and its letter on three scales, has a free print button, and links to a page for each score: 15 out of 20, for example, is 75%, a C on all three common scales. For a test of another length, type it in the calculator above and the easy grader chart beside the result lists every score.
Which letter grade? The scale behind the chart
The letter next to each score depends on your school's scale. The 10 point scale (90 A, 80 B, 70 C, 60 D) is the default here; pick pluses and minuses or the 7 point scale in the calculator's grading options and the result and the easy grader chart follow it. The score charts for each test length, linked above, show all three scales side by side. Looking up one percentage? The full grading scale with every percentage lists 100 down to 50 on all three scales, with GPA points.

A test usually passes at 60% (a D) on the 10 point scale and at 70% on a 7 point scale, so on a 20 question test that is 12 or 14 right. Whether a D passes the class in high school or college, and when you need a C or better, is in our guide to passing grades.
Questions and answers
How do I calculate a test grade percentage?
Divide the number right by the number of questions and multiply by 100. On a 20 question test with 3 wrong, 17 / 20 x 100 = 85%, a B on the common 10 point scale. Each question on a 20 question test is worth 5%, so every extra miss costs 5 points.
What is an easy grader chart?
A table that lists the percentage for every possible number wrong on a test of a given length, so a teacher can grade a stack of papers without a calculator. Type the number of questions once and the chart on the right covers 0 wrong down to all wrong; print it or share the link with a colleague.
Why can the same test score be a different letter at two schools?
The percentage is the same everywhere, but the cutoffs are not. 80% is a B on the 10 point scale, a B- with pluses and minuses and a C on the 7 point scale. Pick your school's scale in the calculator's grading options and the result and the easy grader chart follow it.
How do I make a grading chart for any number of questions?
Type the number of questions once and the easy grader chart beside the result lists every possible score, from all right to all wrong, with its percent and letter. Set rounding to whole percent if you record whole numbers, then print the chart or share its link with a colleague.
Can I use this for points instead of questions?
Yes. Enter the points possible as the number of questions and the points lost as the number wrong, or switch to counting right answers and enter the points earned. Partial credit works as long as you enter whole numbers; for half points double both numbers.
Can I look up one score instead of grading a whole test?
Yes. Enter the number of questions and the number right, and the result shows the percent and letter for that one score. For the common lengths (10, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60 questions) there is also a ready chart per length, with a page for every score from half marks up.
Is this an online grader for teachers?
Yes. Set the number of questions once, then read the chart beside the result for every score in the stack, or tap the number wrong for each paper. It grades quizzes as easily as tests, with no ads over the chart and a print layout that fits one page.
