How this calculator works
This AP Bio score calculator follows the College Board's exam description for the 2027 exam: 50% multiple choice (60 points), 50% free response (34 points). Each raw point is multiplied by its section weight and the sections are added into a composite out of 100. Free response (FRQ) has 6 questions worth 9, 9, 4, 4, 4, 4 points, so enter the rubric points you expect for each one.
The composite is then matched to a 1 to 5. The College Board does not publish the cutoffs for current exams, so this calculator uses estimated boundaries: on our table a 5 starts at 75, a 4 at 60, a 3 at 43 and a 2 at 26 composite points. They are estimates, not official scores, and the real boundaries move a little from year to year. That is why the result shows how far you are from the next cutoff and which section gives you the most for one more point.
The 2027 AP Biology exam is on Monday, May 3 in the afternoon session, which starts at 12 p.m. local time at most US schools. See the AP exam schedule 2027 for every date.
Worked example
A student scores about 65% of the points in every part of the AP Biology exam: Multiple choice 39 of 60, Long question 1 6 of 9, Long question 2 6 of 9, Short question 3 3 of 4, Short question 4 3 of 4, Short question 5 3 of 4, Short question 6 3 of 4.
- Multiple choice: 39 of 60 raw points x 0.8333 = 32.5 composite points.
- Free response: 24 of 34 raw points x 1.4706 = 35.3 composite points.
- Add the sections: 67.8 of 100 composite points.
- On our estimated 2027 cutoffs that is a 4, 7.2 points below a 5.
Estimated AP Biology score: 4. This is an estimate: the College Board sets the real cutoffs after each exam.
AP Bio score distribution 2026
How your estimate compares: in May 2026, 71% of AP Biology students earned a 3 or higher and 15% earned a 5. The bars show the share of all test takers at each score, from the College Board's official score distributions. They are the best public guide to how hard each score is to reach, and the reason the cutoffs above are estimates: the College Board sets them after every exam so that the scores mean the same from year to year.

Questions and answers
What is a good score on the AP Biology exam?
A 3 earns credit at many colleges, a 4 at most, and a 5 is usually required by the most selective ones. In May 2026, 71% of students scored a 3 or higher and 15% earned a 5. Like any AP Bio exam score calculator, this one works best with a full timed practice test.
How many questions can I miss on AP Bio and still get a 5?
On our table a 5 starts at 75 of 100 composite points. With a strong free response section (28 of 34 points) you can miss about 20 of the 60 multiple choice questions and still reach a 5. The goal box shows the exact count for your own numbers.
How are the AP Biology free response questions scored?
Two long questions at 8 to 10 points and four short questions at 4 points each, scored with rubrics that reward describing, explaining, predicting and justifying with evidence. We use 9 points for each long question from the latest scoring guidelines; the exact split changes a little each year.
Is the AP Biology exam curved?
Not in the classroom sense: there is no fixed percent for each score. The College Board sets the cutoffs after the exam so that the 1 to 5 scores mean the same across years. Published estimates put a 5 anywhere from about 63% to 78% of the composite; we use 75, the stricter end, so a predicted 5 here is a safe 5.
What percentage do I need for a 5 on AP Biology?
On our table a 5 starts at about 75 of 100 composite points, so roughly 75% of the available points. The real cutoff is set by the College Board after the exam and is not published, so treat a result within a few points of the line as a 4 to 5.
Is this AP Bio score calculator accurate?
The section weights and point values come from the College Board's course and exam description and scoring guidelines, so the composite follows the official weighting for the points you enter. The 1 to 5 is an estimate: the College Board never publishes cutoffs, so our boundaries average published third party estimates, named under the result with the date we checked them. Your real score can differ by one step when you are close to a cutoff.
Can I use this AP Bio calculator for a 2026 exam or practice test?
Yes, as long as your practice test has the same sections as the May 2027 exam described above. Enter your points from a released 2026 free response set or a full practice test and the composite is calculated the same way. The 1 to 5 uses our estimated 2027 cutoffs, and the 2026 score distribution on this page shows how real students did last May.
Does a 3 on AP Biology count for college credit?
Many colleges give credit or placement for a 3, and selective colleges often ask for a 4 or 5 in this subject. The policy is set by each college, not by the College Board, so check the AP credit page of the colleges on your list before you decide which scores to send.
