How AP scores are calculated
Every AP exam turns your raw points into a composite score and the composite into a 1 to 5. Each subject calculator uses that exam's official format: how many multiple choice questions there are, how many rubric points each free response question is worth, and how much each section counts. Those numbers come from the College Board's public course and exam descriptions and scoring guidelines, and every result links to its source. Planning your May? See the AP exam schedule 2027 for every date and session.
Every AP exam score calculator here takes the same input and does the same math. The last step, the cutoffs between a 3, 4 and 5, changes a little every year and is not published for current exams. Our cutoffs are estimates built from released scoring worksheets and published score boundaries, and every result says so. That is why each calculator also shows how many composite points you are from the next score: if you are close to a line, both scores are realistic.
AP score distribution 2026: every exam
The share of students at each score, from the College Board's official 2026 score distributions, sorted the way the calculators are grouped above. The last column is the share who earned a 3 or higher, the score most colleges credit. Use it to see how your subject compares before you read too much into one estimate: a 4 on AP Calculus BC and a 4 on AP Physics 1 sit in very different company.

Questions and answers
How is an AP score calculated?
Each section of the exam gives raw points: one point per correct multiple choice answer and rubric points for every free response question. The sections are weighted (often 50% multiple choice and 50% free response), added into a composite, and the composite is matched to a 1 to 5 score with cutoffs the College Board sets after each exam. Every subject calculator here shows the section weights it uses.
How accurate is an AP score calculator?
The section weights and point values come from the official course and exam descriptions and scoring guidelines, so the composite is solid. The College Board never publishes the cutoffs, so the 1 to 5 is an estimate: our boundaries average published third party estimates, named under each result with the date we checked them (AP Seminar and AP Research, which have none, use a rough model). Each result shows how close you are to the next score, because a few points either way can change it.
What AP score do I need for college credit?
Most colleges give credit for a 3 or higher, and many selective colleges ask for a 4 or 5, sometimes only for certain subjects. The policy is set by each college, not by the College Board, so check the AP credit page of the colleges on your list.
Where do I see my AP scores?
In your College Board account: sign in with the same login you used for AP registration and open the scores page. Your scores are also sent to the college you chose for your free score send. Scores come out in July; the AP exam schedule guide has the release date.
What is a good AP score? Is a 3 good?
A good AP score is a 3 or higher: a 3 means qualified and earns credit or placement at many colleges, so it is a solid result. The share of 4s and 5s differs a lot from subject to subject, and many selective colleges ask for a 4 or 5 before they give credit.
Do AP classes raise my GPA?
At many high schools an AP class adds a weighted bonus, usually one extra grade point, so an A counts as 5.0 instead of 4.0. Use the high school GPA calculator with the AP level on to see what your AP classes do to your weighted GPA.
Is a 70% a 5 on the AP exam?
Often, but not always. On many exams a 5 starts somewhere between about 60% and 75% of the composite points, so 70% is a 5 on some subjects (Calculus BC, Physics C) and a 4 on others (Microeconomics, APUSH). Pick your subject above: each calculator shows the cutoffs it uses.
Is this an AP score converter or an AP score predictor?
Both, in the plain sense: it converts raw section points into a composite and predicts the 1 to 5 that composite would earn with our estimated cutoffs. Either way the input is the same: your multiple choice count and your free response points from a practice exam.
What percentage of students get a 5 on each AP exam?
It ranges from about 10% (AP Seminar, AP Computer Science Principles) to over 45% (AP Calculus BC, AP Chinese, AP Japanese) in 2026. The score distribution table above lists every exam with the share at each score and the share at 3 or higher, from the College Board's official 2026 distributions.
Is a 2 a bad AP score?
A 2 means possibly qualified and almost never earns college credit, but it does not hurt your college application: you choose which scores to send, and many colleges do not require AP scores at all. The course itself still shows on your transcript, which is what admissions offices weigh most.
