How this calculator works
This AP Lit score calculator follows the College Board's exam description for the 2027 exam: 45% multiple choice (55 points), 55% essays (18 points). Each raw point is multiplied by its section weight and the sections are added into a composite out of 100. Essays has 3 questions worth 6, 6, 6 points, so enter the rubric points you expect for each one.
The composite is then matched to a 1 to 5. The College Board does not publish the cutoffs for current exams, so this calculator uses estimated boundaries: on our table a 5 starts at 77.5, a 4 at 67, a 3 at 55.5 and a 2 at 42.5 composite points. They are estimates, not official scores, and the real boundaries move a little from year to year. That is why the result shows how far you are from the next cutoff and which section gives you the most for one more point.
The 2027 AP English Literature and Composition exam is on Wednesday, May 5 in the morning session, which starts at 8 a.m. local time at most US schools. See the AP exam schedule 2027 for every date.

Questions and answers
How is AP Lit scored?
55 multiple choice questions count 45% and three essays (poetry analysis, prose fiction analysis and literary argument), each scored 0 to 6, count 55%. On our 100 point table a multiple choice answer is worth about 0.82 composite points and an essay point about 3.06. This AP Lit calculator works as an AP English Literature score calculator for the full exam.
What percentage do I need for a 5 on AP Lit?
On our table a 5 starts at 77.5 of 100 composite points. For example 45 of 55 multiple choice right with 14 of 18 essay points gives 79.6, a 5; the same 45 right with 13 essay points gives 76.5, a 4. One essay point moves the composite by about three multiple choice answers.
Is AP Lit harder than AP Lang?
Fewer students earn a 5 on AP Literature than on AP Language most years, and the pass rates are close. The formats match (45% multiple choice, 55% essays), but AP Lit asks you to read poetry and fiction closely under time, which many students find harder than the nonfiction of AP Lang.
How many multiple choice questions can I miss on AP Lit and still get a 4?
A 4 starts at 67 on our table. With 12 essay points (4, 4, 4) you need about 38 of 55 multiple choice right (67.8), so you can miss about 17. With 14 essay points, 30 right is enough (67.3). The goal box works this out for your own essay scores.
Is this AP Lit score calculator accurate?
The section weights and point values come from the College Board's course and exam description and scoring guidelines, so the composite follows the official weighting for the points you enter. The 1 to 5 is an estimate: the College Board never publishes cutoffs, so our boundaries average published third party estimates, named under the result with the date we checked them. Your real score can differ by one step when you are close to a cutoff.
Can I use this AP Lit calculator for a 2026 exam or practice test?
Yes, as long as your practice test has the same sections as the May 2027 exam described above. Enter your points from a released 2026 free response set or a full practice test and the composite is calculated the same way. The 1 to 5 uses our estimated 2027 cutoffs, and the 2026 score distribution on this page shows how real students did last May.
Does a 3 on AP English Literature and Composition count for college credit?
Many colleges give credit or placement for a 3, and selective colleges often ask for a 4 or 5 in this subject. The policy is set by each college, not by the College Board, so check the AP credit page of the colleges on your list before you decide which scores to send.
