How this calculator works
This AP HUG score calculator follows the College Board's exam description for the 2027 exam: 50% multiple choice (60 points), 50% free response (21 points). Each raw point is multiplied by its section weight and the sections are added into a composite out of 100. Free response (FRQ) has 3 questions worth 7, 7, 7 points, so enter the rubric points you expect for each one.
The composite is then matched to a 1 to 5. The College Board does not publish the cutoffs for current exams, so this calculator uses estimated boundaries: on our table a 5 starts at 69, a 4 at 56.5, a 3 at 46.5 and a 2 at 34.5 composite points. They are estimates, not official scores, and the real boundaries move a little from year to year. That is why the result shows how far you are from the next cutoff and which section gives you the most for one more point.
The 2027 AP Human Geography exam is on Monday, May 3 in the morning session, which starts at 8 a.m. local time at most US schools. See the AP exam schedule 2027 for every date.
Worked example
A student scores about 65% of the points in every part of the AP Human Geography exam: Multiple choice 39 of 60, Question 1 5 of 7, Question 2 5 of 7, Question 3 5 of 7.
- Multiple choice: 39 of 60 raw points x 0.8333 = 32.5 composite points.
- Free response: 15 of 21 raw points x 2.381 = 35.7 composite points.
- Add the sections: 68.2 of 100 composite points.
- On our estimated 2027 cutoffs that is a 4, 0.8 points below a 5.
Estimated AP Human Geography score: 4. This is an estimate: the College Board sets the real cutoffs after each exam.
AP HUG score distribution 2026
How your estimate compares: in May 2026, 66% of AP Human Geography students earned a 3 or higher and 19% earned a 5. The bars show the share of all test takers at each score, from the College Board's official score distributions. They are the best public guide to how hard each score is to reach, and the reason the cutoffs above are estimates: the College Board sets them after every exam so that the scores mean the same from year to year.

Questions and answers
How is AP Human Geography scored?
60 multiple choice questions make up half of the score and three free response questions at 7 points each make up the other half. One question has no stimulus, one has one stimulus (a map, chart or image) and one has two. Students call it AP Human Geo or AP HUG; the exam is the same.
What percentage do I need for a 5 on AP Human Geography?
On our table a 5 starts at 69 of 100 composite points, for example 45 of 60 multiple choice right plus 15 of 21 free response points, which gives about 73. Because the free response is half the score, each free response point is worth about 2.4 composite points.
Is AP Human Geography a good first AP?
It is the most common first AP for ninth graders, and the content is approachable, but the 5 rate is modest and many students score a 2. The free response half is where first-time AP students lose most, so practice writing complete, specific answers.
How many questions can I miss on AP Human Geography and still pass?
A 3 starts at 46.5 composite points on our table. With 10 of 21 free response points you need about 28 of 60 multiple choice right, so you can miss more than half. The goal box shows the exact count for your own points.
Is this AP HUG score calculator accurate?
The section weights and point values come from the College Board's course and exam description and scoring guidelines, so the composite follows the official weighting for the points you enter. The 1 to 5 is an estimate: the College Board never publishes cutoffs, so our boundaries average published third party estimates, named under the result with the date we checked them. Your real score can differ by one step when you are close to a cutoff.
Can I use this AP HUG calculator for a 2026 exam or practice test?
Yes, as long as your practice test has the same sections as the May 2027 exam described above. Enter your points from a released 2026 free response set or a full practice test and the composite is calculated the same way. The 1 to 5 uses our estimated 2027 cutoffs, and the 2026 score distribution on this page shows how real students did last May.
Does a 3 on AP Human Geography count for college credit?
Many colleges give credit or placement for a 3, and selective colleges often ask for a 4 or 5 in this subject. The policy is set by each college, not by the College Board, so check the AP credit page of the colleges on your list before you decide which scores to send.
