How this calculator works

Worked example

A student scores about 65% of the points in every part of the AP Physics C: Mechanics exam: Multiple choice 27 of 42, Mathematical routines 7 of 10, Translation between representations 8 of 12, Experimental design and analysis 7 of 10, Qualitative and quantitative translation 5 of 8.

  1. Multiple choice: 27 of 42 raw points x 1.1905 = 32.1 composite points.
  2. Free response: 27 of 40 raw points x 1.25 = 33.8 composite points.
  3. Add the sections: 65.9 of 100 composite points.
  4. On our estimated 2027 cutoffs that is a 5, the top score.

Estimated AP Physics C: Mechanics score: 5. This is an estimate: the College Board sets the real cutoffs after each exam.

Questions and answers

What percentage do I need for a 5 on AP Physics C: Mechanics?

On our table a 5 starts at 56.5 of 100 composite points, for example 25 of 42 multiple choice right plus 22 of 40 free response points. Physics C: Mechanics has one of the highest 5 rates of any AP exam, close to 25% in recent years, because most students taking it are strong in calculus.

How does the AP Physics C: Mechanics exam differ from Physics 1?

Physics C uses calculus and covers mechanics in more depth, with a multiple choice section and four free response questions in the current format. The 1 to 5 cutoffs are set separately, and a 5 has typically needed a lower share of the points than on Physics 1.

How are the Physics C: Mechanics free response questions scored?

Four questions worth 40 points in total: mathematical routines (10), translation between representations (12), experimental design and analysis (10) and qualitative or quantitative translation (8). Rubric points reward correct calculus setup and reasoning, with partial credit throughout.

Do I need to take both Physics C exams?

No. Mechanics and Electricity and Magnetism are separate exams with separate scores, usually taken on the same day. Many students take only Mechanics. This AP Physics C score calculator covers Mechanics; Electricity and Magnetism has its own page for the second exam.

What percent do I need to get a 3 on AP Physics C: Mechanics?

A 3 starts at about 34.5 of 100 composite points on our table, which is roughly 34.5% of the available points. Because the sections are weighted, it depends on where you lose the points: with a strong free response section you can miss a good share of the 42 multiple choice questions. Enter your expected points and the goal box shows exactly what a 3 needs.

Is this AP Physics C Mechanics score calculator accurate?

The section weights and point values come from the College Board's course and exam description and scoring guidelines, so the composite follows the official weighting for the points you enter. The 1 to 5 is an estimate: the College Board never publishes cutoffs, so our boundaries average published third party estimates, named under the result with the date we checked them. Your real score can differ by one step when you are close to a cutoff.

Can I use this AP Physics C Mechanics calculator for a 2026 exam or practice test?

Yes, as long as your practice test has the same sections as the May 2027 exam described above. Enter your points from a released 2026 free response set or a full practice test and the composite is calculated the same way. The 1 to 5 uses our estimated 2027 cutoffs, and the 2026 score distribution on this page shows how real students did last May.

Does a 3 on AP Physics C: Mechanics count for college credit?

Many colleges give credit or placement for a 3, and selective colleges often ask for a 4 or 5 in this subject. The policy is set by each college, not by the College Board, so check the AP credit page of the colleges on your list before you decide which scores to send.
