What a 4.0 GPA means
A 4.0 is exactly an A average on the common 4.0 scale, which puts it at about 97% (an A runs 93 to 100 percent where schools use pluses and minuses). That is the top of the unweighted scale, 0.89 points above the 3.11 national average for the class of 2019.
Is an A+ worth more than 4.0? Only at schools on a 4.33 scale; the A+ GPA page shows both readings and which one your transcript uses.
| Scale | 4.0 equals |
|---|---|
| Letter grade | A |
| Percentage (10 point, plus and minus) | 93 to 100% |
| Plain 10 point scale | A, 90 to 100% |
| 5.0 weighted scale (all AP or IB classes) | 5.0 |
The 5.0 row is the same grades with every class AP, IB or dual enrollment, which adds 1.0 to each grade except an F (Honors adds 0.5). Source: Rockingham County Schools (NC), state ten point grade scale and course weighting, checked Oct 17, 2026. Your school's weighting may differ.

Grades that make a 4.0 GPA
With six classes of equal credits there is only one way to land on a 4.0: A, A, A, A, A, A, which averages 4.00.
| Grades in six equal credit classes | GPA |
|---|---|
| A, A, A, A, A, A | 4.00 |
Common 4.0 scale, unweighted; each average rounds to 4.0. Classes with more credits count for more.
Keeping a 4.0
A 4.0 only stays a 4.0 with an A in every class, so the question becomes how much room one lower grade leaves. The table shows where a single B lands you at three points in a degree.
| Starting point | After a 15 hour term with one 3 hour B |
|---|---|
| After one semester (15 hours) | 3.90 |
| After one year (30 hours) | 3.93 |
| After two years (60 hours) | 3.96 |
Unweighted 4.0 scale, credits weighted.
To add each class with its own grade and credits, use the cumulative GPA calculator; to see how many terms a higher GPA takes from your own credits, use the raise GPA calculator.
If your school ranks students, it usually uses GPA, often weighted. To see your place as a percentile or decile, use the class rank calculator.
How this calculator works
A 4.0 is exactly the points of an A on the common 4.0 scale, so no rounding is involved: the letter, the 93 to 100 percent band and the tables all read straight from the scale files. Your school may count an A+ as 4.33, drop pluses and minuses, or weight honors and AP classes, so this is the common reading, not a rule.
The planner at the top starts with a 4.0 over 30 credits and a term of As over 15: (4.0 x 30 + 4.0 x 15) / 45 = 4.00. Change the credits or the average you expect and the new cumulative GPA updates; the more credits are behind a GPA, the less one term moves it.
Worked example
You have a 4.0 GPA over 30 credit hours and you are taking 15 hours next term. What does a term of straight As do, and what term GPA reaches a 4.0?
- Quality points so far: 4.0 x 30 = 120.
- A term of As adds 4.0 x 15 = 60 points: (120 + 60) / 45 = 4.00.
- A 4.0 cannot go higher; every A keeps it there.
Straight As keep a 4.0 at 4.0.
Questions and answers
Is a 4.0 GPA good?
A 4.0 is an A average, the top of the unweighted scale. It sits 0.89 points above the 3.11 national average for the class of 2019. There is no higher unweighted GPA on the common 4.0 scale.
Is a 4.0 GPA good in college?
Yes. In college a 4.0 is above the usual summa cum laude line (3.9) and above every dean's list, scholarship and graduate school minimum. Each college sets its own honors lines, so check your catalog.
What letter grade is a 4.0 GPA?
4.0 GPA letter grade: A. The common 4.0 scale gives an A exactly 4.0 points. On the 10 point scale with pluses and minuses an A covers 93 to 100 percent.
What is a 4.0 GPA in percentage?
About 97% on the 10 point scale with pluses and minuses, where an A runs from 93 to 100. There is no exact conversion back, because a GPA only keeps the letter: a 93% and a 100% are both an A and both count 4.0. The converter on the GPA scale page uses your own school's scale.
Can a 4.0 GPA go any higher?
Not on an unweighted 4.0 scale. A weighted GPA can pass 4.0 when honors, AP, IB or dual enrollment classes carry a bonus, which is why high schools report both numbers. Keep every grade an A and the 4.0 stays.
Is a 4.0 GPA good for college admissions and scholarships?
Usually, yes. A 4.0 is well above the 3.11 US average and clears every common scholarship line. Selective colleges publish the GPA range of their admitted students in their Common Data Set or class profile, so compare with the colleges on your list; course rigor and test scores decide the rest.
