How this calculator works
This AP Euro score calculator follows the College Board's exam description for the 2027 exam: 40% multiple choice (55 points), 20% short answer (9 points), 25% document-based question (7 points), 15% long essay (6 points). Each raw point is multiplied by its section weight and the sections are added into a composite out of 100. Short answer has 3 questions worth 3, 3, 3 points, so enter the rubric points you expect for each one.
The composite is then matched to a 1 to 5. The College Board does not publish the cutoffs for current exams, so this calculator uses estimated boundaries: on our table a 5 starts at 76.5, a 4 at 61, a 3 at 49 and a 2 at 35.5 composite points. They are estimates, not official scores, and the real boundaries move a little from year to year. That is why the result shows how far you are from the next cutoff and which section gives you the most for one more point.
The 2027 AP European History exam is on Tuesday, May 4 in the afternoon session, which starts at 12 p.m. local time at most US schools. See the AP exam schedule 2027 for every date.
Worked example
A student scores about 65% of the points in every part of the AP European History exam: Multiple choice 36 of 55, Short answer 1 2 of 3, Short answer 2 2 of 3, Short answer 3 2 of 3, Document-based question 5 of 7, Long essay 4 of 6.
- Multiple choice: 36 of 55 raw points x 0.7273 = 26.2 composite points.
- Short answer: 6 of 9 raw points x 2.2222 = 13.3 composite points.
- Document-based question: 5 of 7 raw points x 3.5714 = 17.9 composite points.
- Long essay: 4 of 6 raw points x 2.5 = 10 composite points.
- Add the sections: 67.4 of 100 composite points.
- On our estimated 2027 cutoffs that is a 4, 9.1 points below a 5.
Estimated AP European History score: 4. This is an estimate: the College Board sets the real cutoffs after each exam.

AP Euro score distribution 2026
How your estimate compares: in May 2026, 74% of AP European History students earned a 3 or higher and 16% earned a 5. The bars show the share of all test takers at each score, from the College Board's official score distributions. They are the best public guide to how hard each score is to reach, and the reason the cutoffs above are estimates: the College Board sets them after every exam so that the scores mean the same from year to year.

Questions and answers
How is AP European History scored?
55 multiple choice questions (40%), three short answer questions at 3 points each (20%), a document-based question out of 7 (25%) and a long essay out of 6 (15%), added into a composite out of 100 on our table and converted to a 1 to 5.
What percentage do I need for a 5 on AP Euro?
On our table a 5 starts at 76.5 of 100 composite points, slightly above APUSH and World. AP Euro draws a smaller, often well prepared group, so its 5 rate has been among the higher ones of the history exams.
Is AP Euro harder than APUSH?
The format and rubrics are the same, and the score distributions are similar, with AP Euro usually a little higher. The content is less familiar to most American students, which is why many find the multiple choice harder in the first months.
How many points is the AP Euro long essay?
Six: thesis (1), contextualization (1), evidence (up to 2) and analysis and reasoning (up to 2). You choose one of three prompts from different time periods, so pick the one where you can name the most specific evidence.
What percent do I need to get a 3 on AP European History?
A 3 starts at about 49 of 100 composite points on our table, which is roughly 49% of the available points. Because the sections are weighted, it depends on where you lose the points: with a strong free response section you can miss a good share of the 55 multiple choice questions. Enter your expected points and the goal box shows exactly what a 3 needs.
Is this AP Euro score calculator accurate?
The section weights and point values come from the College Board's course and exam description and scoring guidelines, so the composite follows the official weighting for the points you enter. The 1 to 5 is an estimate: the College Board never publishes cutoffs, so our boundaries average published third party estimates, named under the result with the date we checked them. Your real score can differ by one step when you are close to a cutoff.
Can I use this AP Euro calculator for a 2026 exam or practice test?
Yes, as long as your practice test has the same sections as the May 2027 exam described above. Enter your points from a released 2026 free response set or a full practice test and the composite is calculated the same way. The 1 to 5 uses our estimated 2027 cutoffs, and the 2026 score distribution on this page shows how real students did last May.
Does a 3 on AP European History count for college credit?
Many colleges give credit or placement for a 3, and selective colleges often ask for a 4 or 5 in this subject. The policy is set by each college, not by the College Board, so check the AP credit page of the colleges on your list before you decide which scores to send.
