Cutoffs we use for the 2027 exam
| Score 5 | 72 of 100 or more |
|---|---|
| Score 4 | 55 of 100 or more |
| Score 3 | 41 of 100 or more |
| Score 2 | 28 of 100 or more |
Cutoffs are estimates for the 2027 exam. The College Board sets the real ones after each exam. Reference: AP Physics 1 exam format and estimated cutoffs (2027, checked Oct 2026). Sources and assumptions
How this calculator works
This AP Physics 1 score calculator follows the College Board's exam description for the 2027 exam: 50% multiple choice (42 points), 50% free response (40 points). Each raw point is multiplied by its section weight and the sections are added into a composite out of 100. Free response (FRQ) has 4 questions worth 10, 12, 10, 8 points, so enter the rubric points you expect for each one.
The composite is then matched to a 1 to 5. The College Board does not publish the cutoffs for current exams, so this calculator uses estimated boundaries: on our table a 5 starts at 72, a 4 at 55, a 3 at 41 and a 2 at 28 composite points. They are estimates, not official scores, and the real boundaries move a little from year to year. That is why the result shows how far you are from the next cutoff and which section gives you the most for one more point.
The 2027 AP Physics 1 exam is on Wednesday, May 5 in the afternoon session, which starts at 12 p.m. local time at most US schools. See the AP exam schedule 2027 for every date.
Worked example
A student scores about 65% of the points in every part of the AP Physics 1: Algebra-Based exam: Multiple choice 27 of 42, Mathematical routines 7 of 10, Translation between representations 8 of 12, Experimental design and analysis 7 of 10, Qualitative and quantitative translation 5 of 8.
- Multiple choice: 27 of 42 raw points x 1.1905 = 32.1 composite points.
- Free response: 27 of 40 raw points x 1.25 = 33.8 composite points.
- Add the sections: 65.9 of 100 composite points.
- On our estimated 2027 cutoffs that is a 4, 6.1 points below a 5.
Estimated AP Physics 1: Algebra-Based score: 4. This is an estimate: the College Board sets the real cutoffs after each exam.
AP Physics 1 score distribution 2026
How your estimate compares: in May 2026, 68% of AP Physics 1 students earned a 3 or higher and 19% earned a 5. The bars show the share of all test takers at each score, from the College Board's official score distributions. They are the best public guide to how hard each score is to reach, and the reason the cutoffs above are estimates: the College Board sets them after every exam so that the scores mean the same from year to year.

Questions and answers
Why is AP Physics 1 known for low scores?
It has one of the lowest 5 rates of any AP exam, usually under 10%, with fewer than half of students scoring a 3 or higher. The exam rewards reasoning in words and graphs more than memorised formulas, and the free response questions carry half of the composite. Taking a different course? Each AP Physics score calculator on this site (Physics 1, Physics 2, Physics C Mechanics, Physics C E&M) uses that exam's own format.
What percentage do I need for a 5 on AP Physics 1?
On our table a 5 starts at 72 of 100 composite points, for example 32 of 42 multiple choice right plus 28 of 40 free response points. Because so few students reach the top, a 4 is a strong score for most college credit policies.
How are the AP Physics 1 free response questions scored?
Four questions in the current format: mathematical routines (10 points), translation between representations (12), experimental design and analysis (10) and qualitative or quantitative translation (8). Rubric points reward correct physics reasoning, so a wrong final number with a correct method still earns credit.
Did the AP Physics 1 exam format change?
Yes: from May 2025 the exam has a shorter multiple choice section and four free response questions worth 40 points in total, with the 50/50 weighting unchanged. Our cutoffs are an estimate for the new format and are marked as such.
What percent do I need to get a 3 on AP Physics 1: Algebra-Based?
A 3 starts at about 41 of 100 composite points on our table, which is roughly 41% of the available points. Because the sections are weighted, it depends on where you lose the points: with a strong free response section you can miss a good share of the 42 multiple choice questions. Enter your expected points and the goal box shows exactly what a 3 needs.
Is this AP Physics 1 score calculator accurate?
The section weights and point values come from the College Board's course and exam description and scoring guidelines, so the composite follows the official weighting for the points you enter. The 1 to 5 is an estimate: the College Board never publishes cutoffs, so our boundaries average published third party estimates, named under the result with the date we checked them. Your real score can differ by one step when you are close to a cutoff.
Can I use this AP Physics 1 calculator for a 2026 exam or practice test?
Yes, as long as your practice test has the same sections as the May 2027 exam described above. Enter your points from a released 2026 free response set or a full practice test and the composite is calculated the same way. The 1 to 5 uses our estimated 2027 cutoffs, and the 2026 score distribution on this page shows how real students did last May.
Does a 3 on AP Physics 1: Algebra-Based count for college credit?
Many colleges give credit or placement for a 3, and selective colleges often ask for a 4 or 5 in this subject. The policy is set by each college, not by the College Board, so check the AP credit page of the colleges on your list before you decide which scores to send.
