What a 0.9 GPA means
A 0.9 sits between letters; the nearest is a D average on the common 4.0 scale, which puts it at about 64% (a D runs 63 to 66 percent where schools use pluses and minuses). That is below the 2.0 line colleges use for good standing, with room to recover, 2.21 points below the 3.11 national average for the class of 2019.

Grades that make a 0.9 GPA
With six classes of equal credits, 74 different mixes of letter grades round to a 0.9; the table shows the 4 simplest. The simplest is D, D, D, D, D-, D- (0.90); D+, D+, D-, D-, D-, D- gets there too (0.90). A GPA hides which grades made it, so two students with the same 0.9 can have very different transcripts.
| Grades in six equal credit classes | GPA |
|---|---|
| D, D, D, D, D-, D- | 0.90 |
| D+, D+, D-, D-, D-, D- | 0.90 |
| B-, B-, F, F, F, F | 0.90 |
| C, D-, D-, D-, D-, D- | 0.92 |
Common 4.0 scale, unweighted; each average rounds to 0.9. Classes with more credits count for more.
How to raise a 0.9 GPA
How fast a 0.9 moves depends on the credits behind it. The table shows three starting points with a 15 hour term ahead: the GPA after a term of straight As and the term GPA that reaches 2.0, the 2.0 line colleges use for good standing. When one term is not enough, the cell says how many credit hours of straight As get there.
| Starting point | After straight As | Term GPA for a 2.0 |
|---|---|---|
| After one semester (15 hours) | 2.45 | 3.10 |
| After one year (30 hours) | 1.93 | over 4.0 (16.5 hours of As) |
| After two years (60 hours) | 1.52 | over 4.0 (33 hours of As) |
Unweighted 4.0 scale, credits weighted. "Over 4.0": more than one term, with the credits of straight As that reach it. "Not reachable": a 4.0 cumulative, which needs an A in every class from the start.
One class counts too. With 30 credits behind a 0.9, a single 3 credit A lifts it to 1.18, a B lifts it to 1.09 and an F drops it to 0.82.
To add each class with its own grade and credits, use the cumulative GPA calculator; to see how many terms a higher GPA takes from your own credits, use the raise GPA calculator.
If your school ranks students, it usually uses GPA, often weighted. To see your place as a percentile or decile, use the class rank calculator.
How this calculator works
A 0.9 sits between a D- (0.7) and a D (1.0) on the common 4.0 scale, 0.2 and 0.1 points away, so the nearest letter is D. The percentage is placed inside the D band (63 to 66) by how far the GPA sits from the points of a D. Your school may count an A+ as 4.33, drop pluses and minuses, or weight honors and AP classes, so this is the common reading, not a rule.
The planner at the top starts with a 0.9 over 30 credits and a term of As over 15: (0.9 x 30 + 4.0 x 15) / 45 = 1.93. Change the credits or the average you expect and the new cumulative GPA updates; the more credits are behind a GPA, the less one term moves it.
Worked example
You have a 0.9 GPA over 30 credit hours and you are taking 15 hours next term. What does a term of straight As do, and what term GPA reaches a 2.0?
- Quality points so far: 0.9 x 30 = 27.
- A term of As adds 4.0 x 15 = 60 points: (27 + 60) / 45 = 1.93.
- For a 2.0: (2.0 x 45 minus 27) / 15 = 4.20, more than a 4.0 term allows, so it takes more than one term (16.5 hours of straight As).
Straight As lift a 0.9 to 1.93; a 2.0 takes 16.5 hours of straight As.
Questions and answers
Is a 0.9 GPA good?
A 0.9 is a D average, below the 2.0 line colleges use for good standing, with room to recover. It sits 2.21 points below the 3.11 national average for the class of 2019. The next line worth aiming for is 2.0, a common good academic standing line.
Does a 0.9 GPA mean academic probation in college?
At many colleges a cumulative GPA under 2.0, a common good academic standing line, starts academic warning or probation. That is a plan to recover, not a verdict: you keep taking classes while the GPA climbs. With 30 credits behind a 0.9, 3 terms of 15 credits at a B average (3.0) or 2 terms of straight As bring it back to 2.0. Your college catalog names its own line and any grade replacement rule.
What letter grade is a 0.9 GPA?
0.9 GPA letter grade: about a D. The nearest letter on the common 4.0 scale is D (1.0 points), 0.1 above a 0.9, so it reads as a D average with a few lower grades mixed in. On the 10 point scale with pluses and minuses a D covers 63 to 66 percent.
What is a 0.9 GPA in percentage?
About 64% on the 10 point scale with pluses and minuses, where a D runs from 63 to 66. There is no exact conversion back, because a GPA only keeps the letter: a 63% and a 66% are both a D and both count 1.0. The converter on the GPA scale page uses your own school's scale.
How do I raise a 0.9 GPA to a 2.0?
It depends on how many credits the 0.9 already covers. After one semester (15 hours): a 3.10 term GPA over 15 hours; After one year (30 hours): more than one term: 16.5 hours of straight As; After two years (60 hours): more than one term: 33 hours of straight As. The planner above starts at 30 credits; change them to match your transcript.
Is a 0.9 GPA good for college admissions and scholarships?
Not yet. A 0.9 is 1.10 points under the 2.0 many colleges use for good standing and 2.10 points under the 3.0 most merit scholarships start at, so the first goal is 2.0. From 30 credits one term of As over 15 credits lifts it to 1.93; grade replacement, summer classes and a lighter load of classes you can pass well move it faster still.
