How to raise a 3.9 GPA

Raising a 3.9 with a 15 hour term

After one semester (15 hours)3.95not reachable
After one year (30 hours)3.93not reachable
After two years (60 hours)3.92not reachable

Unweighted 4.0 scale, credits weighted. "Over 4.0": more than one term, with the credits of straight As that reach it. "Not reachable": a 4.0 cumulative, which needs an A in every class from the start.

How this calculator works

Worked example

You have a 3.9 GPA over 30 credit hours and you are taking 15 hours next term. What does a term of straight As do, and what term GPA reaches a 4.0?

  1. Quality points so far: 3.9 x 30 = 117.
  2. A term of As adds 4.0 x 15 = 60 points: (117 + 60) / 45 = 3.93.
  3. For a 4.0: (4.0 x 45 minus 117) / 15 = 4.20, more than a 4.0 term allows, so a 4.0 cumulative is out of reach: it needs an A in every class from the start.

Straight As lift a 3.9 to 3.93; a 4.0 stays out of reach.

Questions and answers

Is a 3.9 GPA good?

A 3.9 is an A average, well above the US average and over every common scholarship line. It sits 0.79 points above the 3.11 national average for the class of 2019. The next line worth aiming for is 4.0, the top of the unweighted scale.

Is a 3.9 GPA good in college?

Yes. In college a 3.9 is at the usual summa cum laude line (3.9) and above every dean's list, scholarship and graduate school minimum. Each college sets its own honors lines, so check your catalog.

What letter grade is a 3.9 GPA?

3.9 GPA letter grade: about an A. The nearest letter on the common 4.0 scale is A (4.0 points), 0.1 above a 3.9, so it reads as an A average with a few lower grades mixed in. On the 10 point scale with pluses and minuses an A covers 93 to 100 percent.

What is a 3.9 GPA in percentage?

About 95% on the 10 point scale with pluses and minuses, where an A runs from 93 to 100. There is no exact conversion back, because a GPA only keeps the letter: a 93% and a 100% are both an A and both count 4.0. The converter on the GPA scale page uses your own school's scale.

How do I raise a 3.9 GPA to a 4.0?

It cannot be reached by averaging up: a 4.0 cumulative needs an A in every class from the start, so a 3.9 stays below it. Straight As still move it: after one semester (15 hours) a term of As gives 3.95; after one year (30 hours) a term of As gives 3.93; after two years (60 hours) a term of As gives 3.92. The planner above shows your own numbers.

Is a 3.9 GPA good for college admissions and scholarships?

Usually, yes. A 3.9 is well above the 3.11 US average and clears every common scholarship line. Selective colleges publish the GPA range of their admitted students in their Common Data Set or class profile, so compare with the colleges on your list; course rigor and test scores decide the rest.
