How this calculator works

Worked example

A student scores about 65% of the points in every part of the AP Statistics exam: Multiple choice 27 of 42, Question 1 (Practices 1 and 2) 7 of 10, Question 2 (Practices 3 and 4) 7 of 10, Question 3 (inference) 7 of 10, Question 4 (multiple content areas) 7 of 10.

  1. Multiple choice: 27 of 42 raw points x 1.1905 = 32.1 composite points.
  2. Free response: 28 of 40 raw points x 1.25 = 35 composite points.
  3. Add the sections: 67.1 of 100 composite points.
  4. On our estimated 2027 cutoffs that is a 4, 3.9 points below a 5.

Estimated AP Statistics score: 4. This is an estimate: the College Board sets the real cutoffs after each exam.

Questions and answers

What changed in the AP Statistics exam format?

From the May 2027 exam the test has 42 multiple choice questions and four free response questions at 10 points each (the earlier exam had 40 and six). The 50/50 section weighting is unchanged. Our table uses the new format and marks its cutoffs as low confidence until a full year of results exists.

What percentage do I need for a 5 on AP Stats?

On our table a 5 starts at 71 of 100 composite points, which is about 31 of 42 multiple choice plus 28 of 40 free response points. Fewer than one in five students earns a 5 on AP Statistics, so a 4 is already a strong result.

How is the AP Statistics free response scored?

Each free response question is scored holistically on a 0 to 4 rubric and then scaled: E (essentially correct), P (partially correct) or I (incorrect) on each part sets the question score. Enter the 10-point equivalent you expect for each question; a strong answer with full context and interpretation earns the top band.

Is AP Statistics worth taking for college credit?

Most colleges give credit for an introductory statistics course with a 4 or 5, and many with a 3. Check the policy of the colleges on your list, especially if you plan a major that requires calculus-based statistics instead.

What percent do I need to get a 3 on AP Statistics?

A 3 starts at about 44 of 100 composite points on our table, which is roughly 44% of the available points. Because the sections are weighted, it depends on where you lose the points: with a strong free response section you can miss a good share of the 42 multiple choice questions. Enter your expected points and the goal box shows exactly what a 3 needs.

Is this AP Stats score calculator accurate?

The section weights and point values come from the College Board's course and exam description and scoring guidelines, so the composite follows the official weighting for the points you enter. The 1 to 5 is an estimate: the College Board never publishes cutoffs, so our boundaries average published third party estimates, named under the result with the date we checked them. Your real score can differ by one step when you are close to a cutoff.

Can I use this AP Stats calculator for a 2026 exam or practice test?

Yes, as long as your practice test has the same sections as the May 2027 exam described above. Enter your points from a released 2026 free response set or a full practice test and the composite is calculated the same way. The 1 to 5 uses our estimated 2027 cutoffs, and the 2026 score distribution on this page shows how real students did last May.

Does a 3 on AP Statistics count for college credit?

Many colleges give credit or placement for a 3, and selective colleges often ask for a 4 or 5 in this subject. The policy is set by each college, not by the College Board, so check the AP credit page of the colleges on your list before you decide which scores to send.
