How this calculator works
This AP CSA score calculator follows the College Board's exam description for the 2027 exam: 55% multiple choice (42 points), 45% free response (25 points). Each raw point is multiplied by its section weight and the sections are added into a composite out of 100. Free response (FRQ) has 4 questions worth 7, 7, 5, 6 points, so enter the rubric points you expect for each one.
The composite is then matched to a 1 to 5. The College Board does not publish the cutoffs for current exams, so this calculator uses estimated boundaries: on our table a 5 starts at 77.5, a 4 at 59, a 3 at 46 and a 2 at 36 composite points. They are estimates, not official scores, and the real boundaries move a little from year to year. That is why the result shows how far you are from the next cutoff and which section gives you the most for one more point.
The 2027 AP Computer Science A exam is on Wednesday, May 12 in the afternoon session, which starts at 12 p.m. local time at most US schools. See the AP exam schedule 2027 for every date.
Worked example
A student scores about 65% of the points in every part of the AP Computer Science A exam: Multiple choice 27 of 42, Question 1 (methods and control structures) 5 of 7, Question 2 (class) 5 of 7, Question 3 (array or ArrayList) 3 of 5, Question 4 (2D array) 4 of 6.
- Multiple choice: 27 of 42 raw points x 1.3095 = 35.4 composite points.
- Free response: 17 of 25 raw points x 1.8 = 30.6 composite points.
- Add the sections: 66 of 100 composite points.
- On our estimated 2027 cutoffs that is a 4, 11.5 points below a 5.
Estimated AP Computer Science A score: 4. This is an estimate: the College Board sets the real cutoffs after each exam.
AP CSA score distribution 2026
How your estimate compares: in May 2026, 66% of AP Computer Science A students earned a 3 or higher and 25% earned a 5. The bars show the share of all test takers at each score, from the College Board's official score distributions. They are the best public guide to how hard each score is to reach, and the reason the cutoffs above are estimates: the College Board sets them after every exam so that the scores mean the same from year to year.

Questions and answers
How is AP Computer Science A scored?
42 multiple choice questions count 55% and four free response questions, 25 raw points on our table, count 45%. One multiple choice answer is worth about 1.31 composite points and one free response point about 1.8, so the free response section rewards every partial point.
What percentage do I need for a 5 on AP CSA?
On our table a 5 starts at 77.5 of 100 composite points, for example 32 of 42 multiple choice right with 20 of 25 free response points (77.9). A 4 starts at 59 and a 3 at 46: 25 right with 14 free response points is 57.9, a solid 3.
What are the four AP CSA free response questions about?
Methods and control structures, class design, arrays and ArrayLists, and 2D arrays. Each is scored with a points rubric, so writing part of a correct method earns credit even when the whole thing does not compile in your head.
Can I get a 3 on AP CSA with a weak free response section?
Yes if the multiple choice is strong. A 3 starts at 46 on our table; 35 of 42 multiple choice right is already 45.8 composite points, so a handful of free response points carries you over. Enter your practice numbers to see how many.
What percent do I need to get a 3 on AP Computer Science A?
A 3 starts at about 46 of 100 composite points on our table, which is roughly 46% of the available points. Because the sections are weighted, it depends on where you lose the points: with a strong free response section you can miss a good share of the 42 multiple choice questions. Enter your expected points and the goal box shows exactly what a 3 needs.
Is this AP CSA score calculator accurate?
The section weights and point values come from the College Board's course and exam description and scoring guidelines, so the composite follows the official weighting for the points you enter. The 1 to 5 is an estimate: the College Board never publishes cutoffs, so our boundaries average published third party estimates, named under the result with the date we checked them. Your real score can differ by one step when you are close to a cutoff.
Can I use this AP CSA calculator for a 2026 exam or practice test?
Yes, as long as your practice test has the same sections as the May 2027 exam described above. Enter your points from a released 2026 free response set or a full practice test and the composite is calculated the same way. The 1 to 5 uses our estimated 2027 cutoffs, and the 2026 score distribution on this page shows how real students did last May.
Does a 3 on AP Computer Science A count for college credit?
Many colleges give credit or placement for a 3, and selective colleges often ask for a 4 or 5 in this subject. The policy is set by each college, not by the College Board, so check the AP credit page of the colleges on your list before you decide which scores to send.
