How this calculator works
This AP Art History score calculator follows the College Board's exam description for the 2027 exam: 50% multiple choice (80 points), 50% free response (34 points). Each raw point is multiplied by its section weight and the sections are added into a composite out of 100. Free response (FRQ) has 6 questions worth 8, 6, 5, 5, 5, 5 points, so enter the rubric points you expect for each one.
The composite is then matched to a 1 to 5. The College Board does not publish the cutoffs for current exams, so this calculator uses estimated boundaries: on our table a 5 starts at 71, a 4 at 56.5, a 3 at 45 and a 2 at 36 composite points. They are estimates, not official scores, and the real boundaries move a little from year to year. That is why the result shows how far you are from the next cutoff and which section gives you the most for one more point.
The 2027 AP Art History exam is on Wednesday, May 12 in the afternoon session, which starts at 12 p.m. local time at most US schools. See the AP exam schedule 2027 for every date.
Worked example
A student scores about 65% of the points in every part of the AP Art History exam: Multiple choice 52 of 80, Question 1 (long essay) 5 of 8, Question 2 (long essay) 4 of 6, Question 3 3 of 5, Question 4 3 of 5, Question 5 3 of 5, Question 6 3 of 5.
- Multiple choice: 52 of 80 raw points x 0.625 = 32.5 composite points.
- Free response: 21 of 34 raw points x 1.4706 = 30.9 composite points.
- Add the sections: 63.4 of 100 composite points.
- On our estimated 2027 cutoffs that is a 4, 7.6 points below a 5.
Estimated AP Art History score: 4. This is an estimate: the College Board sets the real cutoffs after each exam.
AP Art History score distribution 2026
How your estimate compares: in May 2026, 67% of AP Art History students earned a 3 or higher and 15% earned a 5. The bars show the share of all test takers at each score, from the College Board's official score distributions. They are the best public guide to how hard each score is to reach, and the reason the cutoffs above are estimates: the College Board sets them after every exam so that the scores mean the same from year to year.

Questions and answers
How is AP Art History scored?
80 multiple choice questions count 50% and six free response questions, 34 raw points on our table (two long essays out of 8 and 6 and four short essays out of 5), count the other 50%. One question is worth about 0.62 composite points and one free response point about 1.47.
What percentage do I need for a 5 on AP Art History?
On our table a 5 starts at 71 of 100 composite points, for example 60 of 80 multiple choice right with 24 of 34 free response points (72.8). A 3 starts at 45: 45 right with 18 free response points gives 54.6, a comfortable 3.
How many works are on the AP Art History image set?
250 required works across ten content areas, and the exam can show any of them, plus works you have not seen for attribution questions. Knowing each work's identifiers (title, artist or culture, date, materials) is the fastest way to earn points on both sections.
Is AP Art History hard?
The pass rate sits near the AP average. The difficulty is volume, not concept: 250 works and their contexts. Students who learn the works in sets by content area, and practice writing a short essay in 10 minutes, usually score above the average.
What percent do I need to get a 3 on AP Art History?
A 3 starts at about 45 of 100 composite points on our table, which is roughly 45% of the available points. Because the sections are weighted, it depends on where you lose the points: with a strong free response section you can miss a good share of the 80 multiple choice questions. Enter your expected points and the goal box shows exactly what a 3 needs.
Is this AP Art History score calculator accurate?
The section weights and point values come from the College Board's course and exam description and scoring guidelines, so the composite follows the official weighting for the points you enter. The 1 to 5 is an estimate: the College Board never publishes cutoffs, so our boundaries average published third party estimates, named under the result with the date we checked them. Your real score can differ by one step when you are close to a cutoff.
Can I use this AP Art History calculator for a 2026 exam or practice test?
Yes, as long as your practice test has the same sections as the May 2027 exam described above. Enter your points from a released 2026 free response set or a full practice test and the composite is calculated the same way. The 1 to 5 uses our estimated 2027 cutoffs, and the 2026 score distribution on this page shows how real students did last May.
Does a 3 on AP Art History count for college credit?
Many colleges give credit or placement for a 3, and selective colleges often ask for a 4 or 5 in this subject. The policy is set by each college, not by the College Board, so check the AP credit page of the colleges on your list before you decide which scores to send.
