How this calculator works
This AP Music Theory score calculator follows the College Board's exam description for the 2027 exam: 45% multiple choice (aural and non-aural) (75 points), 45% written free response (118 points), 10% sight singing (18 points). Each raw point is multiplied by its section weight and the sections are added into a composite out of 100. Written free response has 7 questions worth 9, 9, 24, 24, 25, 18, 9 points; Sight singing has 2 questions worth 9, 9 points, so enter the rubric points you expect for each one.
The composite is then matched to a 1 to 5. The College Board does not publish the cutoffs for current exams, so this calculator uses estimated boundaries: on our table a 5 starts at 70, a 4 at 57.5, a 3 at 45.5 and a 2 at 34 composite points. They are estimates, not official scores, and the real boundaries move a little from year to year. That is why the result shows how far you are from the next cutoff and which section gives you the most for one more point.
The 2027 AP Music Theory exam is on Monday, May 10 in the afternoon session, which starts at 12 p.m. local time at most US schools. See the AP exam schedule 2027 for every date.
Worked example
A student scores about 65% of the points in every part of the AP Music Theory exam: Multiple choice (aural and non-aural) 49 of 75, Melodic dictation 1 6 of 9, Melodic dictation 2 6 of 9, Harmonic dictation 1 16 of 24, Harmonic dictation 2 16 of 24, Part writing from figured bass 16 of 25, Part writing from Roman numerals 12 of 18, Harmonization of a melody 6 of 9, Sight singing 1 6 of 9, Sight singing 2 6 of 9.
- Multiple choice (aural and non-aural): 49 of 75 raw points x 0.6 = 29.4 composite points.
- Written free response: 78 of 118 raw points x 0.3814 = 29.7 composite points.
- Sight singing: 12 of 18 raw points x 0.5556 = 6.7 composite points.
- Add the sections: 65.8 of 100 composite points.
- On our estimated 2027 cutoffs that is a 4, 4.2 points below a 5.
Estimated AP Music Theory score: 4. This is an estimate: the College Board sets the real cutoffs after each exam.
AP Music Theory score distribution 2026
How your estimate compares: in May 2026, 59% of AP Music Theory students earned a 3 or higher and 18% earned a 5. The bars show the share of all test takers at each score, from the College Board's official score distributions. They are the best public guide to how hard each score is to reach, and the reason the cutoffs above are estimates: the College Board sets them after every exam so that the scores mean the same from year to year.

Questions and answers
How is AP Music Theory scored?
75 multiple choice questions, aural and non aural, count 45%; the written free response (dictation, part writing, harmonization and figured bass) counts 45%; and the two sight singing melodies, 18 raw points, count 10%. The exam reports an aural and a non aural subscore as well as the 1 to 5.
What percentage do I need for a 5 on AP Music Theory?
On our table a 5 starts at 70 of 100 composite points, for example 55 of 75 multiple choice right, 80 of 118 written points and 14 of 18 sight singing points (71.3). A 4 starts at 57.5 and a 3 at 45.5. The cutoffs average two published estimates, not College Board numbers.
How much is sight singing worth on AP Music Theory?
10% of the score: two melodies, each scored out of 9, 18 raw points. On our table every sight singing point is worth about 0.56 composite points, so a confident performance with a few pitch errors still earns most of the section.
What is the hardest part of the AP Music Theory exam?
Most students lose the most points on melodic and harmonic dictation, which is written free response and also feeds the aural subscore. Short daily dictation practice raises both the written section and the aural multiple choice, which together carry most of the score.
What percent do I need to get a 3 on AP Music Theory?
A 3 starts at about 45.5 of 100 composite points on our table, which is roughly 45.5% of the available points. Because the sections are weighted, it depends on where you lose the points: with a strong free response section you can miss a good share of the 75 multiple choice questions. Enter your expected points and the goal box shows exactly what a 3 needs.
Is this AP Music Theory score calculator accurate?
The section weights and point values come from the College Board's course and exam description and scoring guidelines, so the composite follows the official weighting for the points you enter. The 1 to 5 is an estimate: the College Board never publishes cutoffs, so our boundaries average published third party estimates, named under the result with the date we checked them. Your real score can differ by one step when you are close to a cutoff.
Can I use this AP Music Theory calculator for a 2026 exam or practice test?
Yes, as long as your practice test has the same sections as the May 2027 exam described above. Enter your points from a released 2026 free response set or a full practice test and the composite is calculated the same way. The 1 to 5 uses our estimated 2027 cutoffs, and the 2026 score distribution on this page shows how real students did last May.
Does a 3 on AP Music Theory count for college credit?
Many colleges give credit or placement for a 3, and selective colleges often ask for a 4 or 5 in this subject. The policy is set by each college, not by the College Board, so check the AP credit page of the colleges on your list before you decide which scores to send.
