Letter grade cutoffs out of 50
The fastest way to grade a stack of 50 question tests is to know the lines. On the 10 point scale an A takes 45 right (5 misses at most), a B 40, a C 35 and a D 30. The 7 point scale is stricter: an A needs 47, a B 43, a C 38 and a pass 35.
Every letter on the plus and minus scale can happen on a 50 question test, because one question (2 points) is narrower than the three point step between a plus, a plain letter and a minus. A full A (93% or more) takes 47 right, so 3 misses at most.

What each question is worth out of 50
Each question is worth 100 / 50 = 2 percentage points, so every miss costs 2 points off a perfect score. That is why 5 misses still leave an A and 21 misses drop you to an F.
The 10 point and 7 point scales disagree on 13 scores out of 50: 30 (D or F), 31 (D or F), 32 (D or F), 33 (D or F), 34 (D or F), 35 (C or D), 36 (C or D), 37 (C or D), 40 (B or C), 41 (B or C), 42 (B or C), 45 (A or B) and 46 (A or B). If your school uses the 7 point scale, read the third letter column.
No score out of 50 lands on a half percent, so rounding to whole percents never changes a letter on this test length.
Passing on the 10 point scale starts at 60%, which is 30 right; on the 7 point scale it is 70%, 35 right. Whether a D passes the whole class is a separate rule, covered in the passing grade guide.
How to grade a 50 question test
Divide the number right by 50 and multiply by 100: 45 / 50 x 100 = 90%. Then read the letter off your school's scale. The lookup at the top does both, for right or wrong answers, and the chart lists every score, so a teacher can grade a whole class from one sheet.
Grading a test of another length, or with weighted sections? The test grade calculator takes any number of questions and builds the easy grader chart for it, and the grading scale chart turns any percentage into a letter. Charts for other lengths: out of 10, out of 12, out of 15, out of 20, out of 25, out of 30, out of 40 and out of 60.
Questions and answers
How many can you miss on a 50 question test and still get an A?
5 questions on the 10 point scale: 45 out of 50 is 90%, the lowest A. A full A with pluses and minuses (93% or more) takes 47 right, so 3 wrong at most, and the 7 point scale draws the same 93% line.
What is a passing score out of 50?
30 right, 60%, where passing starts at 60% (a D on the 10 point scale), so up to 20 wrong. Where passing starts at 70%, as on the 7 point scale, you need 35 right, 70%.
How much is each question worth on a 50 question test?
2 percentage points, because 100 / 50 = 2. One wrong is 98%, two wrong 96% and three wrong 94%.
How many questions can you miss and get a B out of 50?
Up to 10 on the 10 point scale, where 40 out of 50 (80%) is the lowest B and 45 is already an A. With pluses and minuses 40 right is a B-, and on the 7 point scale a B starts at 43 right.
