How long is each section and module of the SAT?
The digital SAT, taken in the Bluebook app, has two sections and each one is split into two modules of equal length. You start with Reading and Writing, take the break, then finish with Math. The first module of each section mixes easy, medium and hard questions; how you do on it decides whether the second module is harder or easier, but never how long it is.
| Section | Modules | Minutes | Questions | Time per question |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reading and Writing | 2 x 32 min | 64 | 54 | 1 minute 11 seconds |
| Math | 2 x 35 min | 70 | 44 | 1 minute 35 seconds |
| Total | 4 modules | 134 | 98 | plus a 10 minute break |
Reading and Writing moves faster, about 1 minute 11 seconds a question, while Math gives you about 1 minute 35 seconds. When you practice, time each module on its own (32 or 35 minutes) rather than the whole test, then score the result with the SAT score calculator to see which section is costing you points.
How many breaks do you get on the SAT?
One. The 10 minute break comes between Reading and Writing and Math, so the testing part runs 2 hours 24 minutes from start to finish. During it, leave your device open, keep your ID with you and leave any calculator on your desk. You may take an unscheduled break at another time, but the timer does not stop, so you lose testing time (College Board, SAT test day: what to expect, checked October 24, 2026).
What time does the SAT start and end on test day?
On weekend test dates, doors open at 7:45 a.m. and close at 8 a.m. unless your admission ticket shows another time, and you cannot be admitted once testing has started. If you borrow a device from College Board, arrive 30 minutes early to set it up. After check in you join the test center's Wi-Fi, open Bluebook and enter the start code; the test begins between 8:15 and 8:30 a.m., depending on how long check in takes.
Standard time finishes around 10:45 to 11 a.m., which is why College Board says to plan on about 3 hours in total. Students testing with time and one-half finish around noon to 12:15 p.m. and with double time around 1 to 1:15 p.m. (College Board, SAT test day: what to expect and College Board blog, How long does the SAT take?, checked October 24, 2026).
How long is the SAT with extended time?
Students approved by College Board for extended time get longer sections and extra breaks. The breaks stop the clock, so they never eat into testing time. Approval for extended time in reading covers the whole test; approval in math extends only the Math section.
| Timing | Reading and Writing | Math | Total testing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 64 | 70 | 2 hours 14 minutes |
| Up to 50% extended | 96 | 106 | 3 hours 22 minutes |
| Up to 100% extended | 128 | 140 | 4 hours 28 minutes |
Requests go through your school's accommodations coordinator well before test day, because a late request may not be approved in time.
Is the SAT longer than the ACT and the PSAT?
The SAT sits in the middle. It runs 9 minutes longer than the ACT's required sections but 31 minutes shorter than the ACT with Science, and it has the same timing as every PSAT. These are testing minutes without breaks:
| Test | Testing minutes | In hours | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| SAT | 134 | 2 hours 14 minutes | 2 sections, 4 modules |
| PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10 and PSAT 8/9 | 134 | 2 hours 14 minutes | same timing as the SAT |
| ACT (English, Math, Reading) | 125 | 2 hours 5 minutes | Science and Writing optional |
| ACT with Science | 165 | 2 hours 45 minutes | 4 sections |
| ACT with Science and Writing | 205 | 3 hours 25 minutes | 5 sections |
| PreACT (grades 9 to 11, from fall 2026) | 160 | 2 hours 40 minutes | 4 sections |
Length is rarely the reason to pick one test. Look at what a good SAT score is for the colleges you want, and if you have taken both, compare your results with the ACT to SAT conversion chart.
How do you pace yourself through 2 hours 14 minutes?
Take at least one full Bluebook practice test under real timing, with the break, so the morning feels familiar. Inside each module, mark a question that stalls you, pick a best guess and come back to it if time allows, so one hard question never eats the minutes three easier ones need. Check your admission ticket the night before for your center's arrival time, and bring a snack and water for the 10 minute break.

How long is each module on the digital SAT?
Each Reading and Writing module is 32 minutes and each Math module is 35 minutes. You take two modules of each, Reading and Writing first, and the second module of a section gets harder or easier depending on how the first one went. Its length stays the same.
How many breaks do you get on the SAT?
One scheduled break of 10 minutes, between Reading and Writing and Math. You can take an unscheduled break, but the clock keeps running, so it costs testing time. Students approved for extended time get extra breaks.
How long is the SAT with extended time?
With up to 50% extended time it is 96 minutes for Reading and Writing and 106 for Math, 3 hours 22 minutes of testing. With up to 100% (double time) it is 128 and 140 minutes, 4 hours 28 minutes. Breaks come on top and do not count toward testing time. College Board has to approve the accommodation before test day.
What time does the SAT end?
On a weekend test date doors open at 7:45 a.m. and close at 8 a.m., testing starts between 8:15 and 8:30 a.m., and standard time ends around 10:45 to 11 a.m. With time and one-half you finish around noon to 12:15 p.m., and with double time around 1 to 1:15 p.m..

It depends on the ACT options. The SAT's 134 minutes are 9 minutes longer than the ACT's three required sections (125 minutes) and 31 minutes shorter than the ACT with Science (165 minutes).
Does the SAT still have an essay?
Not on weekend test dates. Some states add an essay to the SAT they give in school, and where it is included College Board says it adds 50 minutes. Your school tells you if your state is one of them.
How long is the PSAT compared with the SAT?
The same. College Board gives the SAT and the PSAT-related tests (PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10 and PSAT 8/9) the same 2 hours 14 minutes of testing time, 96 and 106 minutes with 50% extended time, plus breaks.
